Morning Cup of Joe – Keeping Secrets

Some things are meant to be locked away in a special place in your mind never to be shared until you are absolutely certain that no one will maliciously borrow or steal your ideas and dreams. Believe it or not, there are people who you share your ideas with that will run with them and present them as if they were their own. If you have ever experience this, you know that it is not a good feeling. That is an unfortunate and sad truth but a truth nonetheless. It is my hope that you will start keeping secrets.

I have always said that the craziest ideas are the ones that are not shared. However, some ideas are yours to share at the time of your choosing and with those special enough to share them with. Do not be misled; there are people who you should not share your dreams with whatsoever. Some are even the closest to you. The reason why sharing your dreams could be detrimental to your achieving them are two-fold. Primarily speaking, you truly never know who is secretly praying against what you are praying for. Secondly, there are some dream stealers out there who want nothing more but to take your dreams and ideas and run with them.

Understand that everyone who is around you isn’t particularly on your side. I share this with you not to scare you but to help you raise awareness that some people would rather see you fail than win. It is perfectly fine to keep some things to yourself, up to and until you are ready to share them with the world. Once, I worked for a corporation where I shared several ideas with my manager during a staff meeting. A couple of months later, at a corporate-wide meeting, my manager was being presented with an award and was also given high praise for these incredible ideas she presented to the board of directors. I stood there in shock as the Regional Vice President shared these ideas that she had brought to the board which went on to change much of the way the company did business. The ideas that she shared with the board were the ideas I had shared with her a couple of months back yet she was given all of the credit and not once acknowledging the fact that those ideas came from me. From that day forward, I vowed never to share an idea unless I am sharing it with a decision maker or I’m the decision maker myself.

Your ideas are unique to your beautiful mind. You can’t tell everyone your dreams because they may borrow it without asking. Understand that sharing your dreams with those who you trust is perfectly acceptable. Be cautious of those dream stealers because they don’t wear disguises. Can you keep a secret? In some cases, you absolutely should.
