I realized a long time ago that you cannot force someone to see things the way you do no matter how much it makes sense to you. Realize that some people just aren’t going to see it from your perspective. Most of us try to drill the point home and force it down someone’s throat by either using expletives or raising our voices or both only to find the distance between you getting your point across and the other party receiving it growing and growing. We are all wired differently and humans are not robots. We are free to think and act as we please within reason.
Sometimes you have to let people make their own mistakes no matter how much you want the best for them. Maintain the understanding that people aren’t going to receive anything they aren’t ready for. Like the old adage says, “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”. Simply, you can show people how to find something or how to do something but you cannot force them to act after that. The frustration comes when we try to force them to act. Some people have to learn on their own, get out of the way and allow them to.
Just because someone isn’t taking your advice or allowing you to show them the way doesn’t mean that you have an inability to lead. As I mentioned earlier, you can’t force people to do anything they do not want to do. It all boils down to free will and allowing one to make their own mistakes. Making mistakes isn’t the real problem, not learning from those mistakes are. No matter how good your intentions may be, continue to lead the proverbial horse to water and show them the way while allowing them to make their own decisions once you put the water in front of them.
