Morning Cup of Joe – Proactive vs Reactive

How many times have you been in a situation where you wished you could have done something differently in order to prevent the outcome that occurred? If you are like most people then your answer is most likely too many to count. We are all familiar with the old adage that “hindsight is 20/20”. What that simply means is that since the situation, problem or circumstance has passed or is behind you, you are now able to look at the things you did wrong or could have done differently in order to prevent or correct that particular issue from ever occurring. In addition, since hind sight means “seeing behind you” and 20/20 is “perfect vision” then it means that a situation is perfectly clear after it has passed. That is the reactive approach.

The reactive approach to life is what most people have adopted. For some it works just fine but this style of problem solving can be quite frustrating to others. When we operate in a reactionary state we act in response to a situation rather than seeking to control or prevent it from happening in the first place. Contrary to popular belief, we have more control over the situations that occur in our lives than we don’t. Don’t wait until a problem occurs before you try to figure out how you could have prevented it. Be proactive.

Being proactive is a skill that most leaders have developed and strengthened. Being proactive to a particular situation simply means that you are using your power to create and control a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has already happened. It is imperative that you use your intuition and foresight to avoid and prevent potential issues down the road. The best way to be proactive rather than reactive is to work on developing a mindset that looks to solve problems instead of dwelling on them. Dwelling on a problem has never solved it. In fact, it delays the inevitability and possibility of being solved.

Take back the control you freely give to your problems, situations and circumstances. You have the power to change your life. Take it from me, I know.
