Be honest, when was the last time you read a book? Seriously, can you remember the last time you read a good book? If you’re having trouble recalling the last time you read a book, that’s not a good thing. I can think back to my childhood when my parents would encourage my siblings and I to read but of course we wouldn’t because reading was boring to us, we’d rather participate in more exciting things like playing outside with friends, playing video games or just doing what kids do. Boy do I wish I would have listened to my parents.
As an avid blogger I am also an avid reader of blogs. One of the blogs I frequent is a blog authored by Dave Ramsey. If you aren’t familiar with Dave Ramsey, he is a New York Times Best Selling Author and radio host who has been coined America’s trusted voice on money. I don’t know about you but I would take advice from that guy. Well, he in fact published a blog entitled “20 Things Rich People Do Every Day” which would obviously catch ones attention as it did mine. Some of the statistics I discovered were staggering; 88% of wealthy read 30 minutes or more each day for education or career reasons vs. 2% of poor. 67% of wealthy watch one hour or less of TV every day vs. 23% of poor. 6% of wealthy watch reality TV vs. 78% of poor.
I learned a long time ago that if you want to be successful then you have to emulate the successful habits of successful people. If you emulate or imitate the same steps a successful person has taken with the same tenacity, discipline and hunger for success, then you too will experience similar successes.
How much time do you spend watching reality TV daily? How much time do you spend reading for education or for career reasons daily? How many hours a day do you watch TV? Hey, we’re all guilty of watching a little more TV than we read but our goal should be to start incorporating a little more reading. Reading truly is fundamental. Take some time to stimulate your brain by reading.
There are tons of benefits to reading including mental stimulation, stress reduction, vocabulary expansion and studies show that you can even improve your memory by reading. They also show that people who read are more likely to get ahead when it comes to their careers and life in general. I don’t know about you but I want to continue to get ahead and if reading is part of what I have to do then I’ll do what I have to and you should join me.
I think you have more than enough reasons to pick up a book, you never know how it may change your life.
