Morning Cup of Joe – It’s Your Responsibility

No one in the world possesses the power to make you better, only you can do that. No one in the world has the ability to tear you down unless you give them permission. There isn’t a soul in the entire universe who can upgrade you; you alone are responsible for your own upgrades. Stop trying to determine your value based on what others think and feel about you. What others think about you is none of your concern.

Where you are today is where you have chosen to be. Certainly our circumstances have something to do with it but I strongly believe that the individual choices we’ve made up to this point is exactly what has gotten us this far. Most of us are where we are by choice not by circumstance. Good choices yield good results. Bad choices, well you know exactly the repercussions of your bad choices and how far those poor choices have gotten you.

At all times focus on self-improvement. Always ask yourself, “How can I get better?”. After a loss, any loss, we must examine why we experienced this loss. We must try to understand where we went wrong and what we are willing to do to improve ourselves so that we don’t continue to experience similar results. Start taking more responsibility for your current circumstances. After all, it is the choices that you’ve chosen to make, good or bad, that has lead you to where you currently are.

Stop allowing others to determine the value of your life; take back the control you have freely given to others. You deserve nothing but the best, don’t you?

Morning Cup of Joe – Your Time Will Come

One of the most difficult things to do is to watch others around you continue to succeed while you seem to be in a holding pattern. You work twice as hard as the next person yet your results are not the same. You wake up early and you go to sleep late working on living the dream. I want you to understand and commit to memory that your day will come. Eventually your day will come but only if you refuse to give up on your dreams.

Understand that everything happens as it is designed to happen. If you aren’t receiving the fruits of your labor it simply means that it isn’t your season to experience harvest. Yet that should not prevent you from working as if your harvest will come tomorrow. No one ever knows when their time to shine will come. I do know this much, the people who are shining stars have one thing in common; they never gave up.

After his very first audition, Sidney Poitier was told by the casting director, “Why don’t you stop wasting people’s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?” Poitier made a decision that day to prove that he could make it in the acting business and in 1963 he became the first and youngest Black actor to win an Oscar for Best Actor. He was also nominated 5 years prior for Best Actor. Imagine if Sidney would’ve listened to the doubters.

Your time will come if you focus on your goal and work as hard as you can for as long as you can. It matters not what others are doing to reach their goals; at all times focus on self. Truthfully, you may seem like the one who is wildly successful in the eyes of others. I want you to really think about what success looks like in your eyes and focus intently on that. Never compare the blessings of others to your own blessings; yours will never seem enough.

Don’t be afraid of failing; that’s the only way you will ever learn how to win. Successful people set high goals and will do whatever it takes to reach them. Don’t be concerned with what the next man is doing, stay in your line and race towards the finish line.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Morning Cup of Joe – Thy Will, Not Mine

If you believe in a higher power it is imperative that you seek assistance from that power as often as you can. The assistance I speak of comes in the form of directions. For example, before you travel to a place you’ve never been before, you typically find, print and follow those directions. While many of us will blindly drive without directions and may eventually reach our destination, it is much simpler to find and/or ask for directions. God works the same way.

Understand that some destinations aren’t meant for you to travel to; that is implicitly why you haven’t been able to get there. Understand that God has a plan for your life and His plan will always trump yours. Some of you have tried to run from your calling and many others try to outright deny it. Some people are foolish enough to think that they are directing their own path. The sooner you realize that God is in control, the sooner you’ll reach the destination He has already planned for you. Let Him take the wheel.

Take a moment right now to choose to get out of your own way. Simply, don’t lose sight of who is directing your path. All you have to do is continue to walk and the signs will become clearer. Ask God to lead the way. One of the most difficult things to do is to transfer the power you thought you had to the one who had it all along; recognize who is in charge. I once heard that if you want to humor God, make plans. Do not be misled; I am not suggesting that you go through life without a plan. I am suggesting that you not try to force your plan into action, especially if all of the signs are pointing you in a different direction.

Get out of your own way and allow God to direct your path. Understand that His will must be done, not yours.

Morning Cup of Joe – Can’t Please Everyone

When we try to please people we become their slaves. We become their slaves because everything we do is to ensure their own happiness. The problem with that equation is that you are forfeiting your own happiness for the happiness of others. With the exception of a spouse, you must ask yourself; “If I’m trying to please everyone, who is trying to please me?” Chances are the answer is no one.

Don’t get caught up in trying to make everyone happy. I know I always say that anything is possible but this is the exception. It is impossible to make everyone happy. In fact, that should never be a goal of yours. Shift the focus to yourself; work on making yourself happy. Your ultimate goal is to try to please God anyway, not man.

Think of your life as a subway train and you’re the conductor. You have a finite destination and many people will come into your life along the way; some will get off early, some may never get on and very few will ride with you until the end. At any rate, at all times focus on the destination. Bill Cosby once said, “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody”. Remove that need of wanting to make everyone happy; you simply can’t.

Happiness comes from within; you cannot reasonably expect someone else to fill that void.

Morning Cup of Joe – Turn It Over To God

There is something I am going to tell you that may surprise you but please understand that it is a fact. The fact is that some battles aren’t yours to fight. Although we are strong, most of us are too stubborn to realize when our strength is not enough to win a fight. Yet that does not prevent us from entering a fight. When you find yourself starting to lose strength or when you feel that you may lose a battle, simply turn it over to God.

Sometimes we enter unwinnable battles; at times on purpose. I believe that when we are tested or thrown off course, it is God trying to tell us something. What He’s trying to tell us is that He possesses the necessary power to win any and every battle. You don’t have to fight alone, you are just choosing to. If you are in a situation where you are constantly battling the same demons, it is because you haven’t asked Him for help.

Imagine fighting your battles in a wrestling ring; you against your problems. Your problem has an issue waiting to be tagged in once you get weak enough for them to tap you out. What you must ask yourself is at your weakest moment, who will you tag in? Look over your shoulder, reach out your hand and tag God in; I guarantee you He won’t lose. Although most of us try, we cannot win every battle on our own. In fact, some battles aren’t meant for you to fight alone.

When you feel like you are in one of those unwinnable battles against your problems, simply call out to God, ask Him for help or turn it over to Him completely. Trust me, He can handle it.

Remember, turn your battles over to God or simply tag Him in; you can’t lose.
