Morning Cup of Joe – Smile, It’s Contagious

Whatever you do, don’t take life so seriously. I often sit and watch others expressions on their faces as they walk pass me. Whether I’m in a crowded subway or a quaint and cozy coffee shop, most people never take the time to smile. You can absolutely tell who is having the worst day of their lives just by their facial expression. You truly only have one life to live so why not enjoy it while you’re here.

Life is too short to be angry. There aren’t too many things in the world that upset me. In fact, I can’t think of one. You may be thinking, “C’mon Joe, nothing upsets you?” My answer will still be no. Here’s why. We are not responsible for others actions towards us. However, we are responsible for how we react to their actions. I simply choose to react sensibly, reasonably and with the idea that I cannot let someone else control my feelings. I am in complete control.

A very good friend always says, “You attract more bees with honey than you do with a fly swatter”. If you aren’t attracting the right kind of attention, it is because you are not projecting that which you seek. A smile always attracts a smile. It takes little to no effort to smile. If you want to be happy, you must choose happiness and the rest will fall into place.

Take a moment right now to smile. See how good that feels? I challenge you to smile more often despite what your circumstances may be. I smile even when frowning may be the “normal” response to a particular situation. Remember, life is meant to be lived to the fullest; you can’t do that if you’re unhappy.

Smile; it’s contagious and it’s attractive.

Morning Cup of Joe – Be Significant

No one ever became successful by accident, despite some claims of success happening overnight. The only thing that ever happens overnight is sleep. Everyone who enjoys the fruits of their labor had to first plant the seed, water it and work hard to ensure that their harvest is productive. Those who become successful simply work harder, smarter and longer than their counterparts. They understand the importance of being the first in and the last out. In fact, their goal is not to be successful at all but to change the world by what they do.

During an interview, Oprah Winfrey was asked about what she attributes to her success and she made a profound statement which I will share with you. She said, “What I know for sure is that if you want to have success, you can’t make success your goal”, “The key is not to worry about being successful, but to instead work toward being significant – and the success will naturally follow.” It is imperative that your goal be to make an impact on the world by the work you do, that’s the only way you will experience success.

Most people see the results of hard work yet fail to recognize the hard work that it takes to arrive at those favorable results. Oprah Winfrey is one of the most successful and wealthiest people in the world and her incredible success is not accidental. She worked hard at perfecting her craft while maintaining the mind-set that no matter what others think, say or feel about where I should be and what I should do, I will follow my heart. The results clearly speak for themselves.

By choosing to become significant rather than successful, you are choosing to leave your mark, and by leaving your mark you will in turn enjoy the benefits of success.

Morning Cup of Joe – Living In The Past

This may come as a surprise to some but to my knowledge there is no time machine that has yet been invented. We all dream about going back to the future and hopefully fixing something we played a part in breaking. In many cases, we hope yet never act on finishing something we started. This is the unfortunate plight of many people who fail to understand that you cannot change the past; all you can do is learn from it and apply those lessons to the future.

Your past, whatever it may be, should merely serve as a reference guide for the future. Most people allow their past to hang over their heads in such a way that it stifles their growth. Your growth is based on your ability to learn lessons from your mistakes. We have all made mistakes, no exemptions. The separation from this group comes when you realize the intended lesson that was meant to be learned from making that particular mistake. Continuing to repeat the same mistake simply means that you haven’t learned the intended lesson.

If you are thinking about an event that occurred in the past or even yesterday, understand that this is not the highest and best use of your time or mind space. You cannot change the past, at all times focus on the future. Tomorrow is not promised but that was true for yesterday and thankfully you are still here. Make today what it should be by thinking forward progress only. So, what’s it going to be? Are you going to live in the past or focus on the future?

Stop living in the past. Yesterday really did end last night.

Morning Cup of Joe – Hitting Rock Bottom

To experience depression is to experience one of the lowest, if not the lowest, emotion of them all. Being depressed means that you have reached a point where you have given up hope on mostly everything in your life; your physical and spiritual health as well as your relationships suffer immensely. Your family and social life suffers and worst of all, you suffer. When you are at a point where you think, feel and believe that life has nothing more to offer, simply step back and reevaluate your situation. If you are on this side of the dirt, there is always hope.

Once you hit rock bottom, the only direction you can go is up. Remember that nothing happens by accident; even our trials and tribulations are set up in such a way to strengthen a particular proverbial muscle. In essence, we go through trials in our lives as a means to show the world that one can overcome tragedy. Simply, we are all here to serve as testimonies. It is imperative that you understand the importance of overcoming your obstacles so that you can be an example for others. Some people are strong because they draw on the strength of others; subscribing to the thought that “if s/he can do it, so can I”. If you overcoming an obstacle serves as an example of what’s possible, simply thank God for the opportunity.

I have been fortunate enough to experience the bottom. I am even more fortunate to learn the simple lesson and understanding that from that point on it can only get better; that’s what I kept telling myself. Along my journey, I have lost many worldly possessions including homes, automobiles and other “stuff”. Once I came to the realization that I am not my “stuff”, my world opened up to new possibilities. I no longer worked hard to possess worldly things; I simply worked hard to possess a greater sense of happiness and a greater sense of awareness.

Why do you think you are going through your trial? I’ll tell you why. For one, it is because God has specifically chosen you. Be thankful and know that you can and will make it through, especially if you believe that you can. Keep fighting and don’t stop believing in the impossible; miracles do happen.

Morning Cup of Joe – Fear of Failing

Most people don’t try because they are afraid of reaching a negative outcome. My question is, how do you know what the outcome will be if you never even try? One of my favorite quotes is “It is better to try and fail than to fail to try”. You never know if you will win or lose if you never try. A winner’s mentality understands that success begins with trying not with reaching a particular desired outcome. At the very least, you must try.

Don’t ever be afraid of failing, that’s truly the only way you will learn and appreciate the joys of winning. Sadly, most people think and even believe that winning is something that they are incapable of experiencing and the fact that they have allowed their minds to think these thoughts simply means they are probably right. Embrace every failure you experience in life as these experiences alone are what will bring you closer to a life filled with incomparable wins.

Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of a champion? Do you think that they think they will lose before the game even starts? If you want to be a champion, you have to start thinking like a champion. All champions understand that the goal of every endeavor is to win. And even if they experience a loss in the process of the pursuit of winning, they learn the intended lesson that losses bring in order to get better, faster and stronger for the next time around. One thing a champion never considers is giving up; neither should you.
