Morning Cup of Joe – As A Man Thinketh

During a recent life coaching session, a client contacted me because they were nervous about a position they had applied for. Naturally, we all get a little nervous when we are unsure of a particular outcome. As the session continued she said something that caused me to pause. She said “I don’t think I’m going to get the position”. My reply was simply, “How do you know?” I was very confused as to why she thought she would not get a position in which she hasn’t even interviewed for yet.

Oftentimes we talk ourselves out of opportunities because we lack the understanding that our words are extremely powerful and have the rare ability to create our reality. In addition, our thoughts have the ability to become things. Most people have difficulty understanding why they don’t win as often as others do. Some believe that they are just plain unlucky. I am here to tell you that success has absolutely nothing to do with luck and everything to do with how you think, what you say and being ready to accept challenges head on.

Like the old adage says, “As a man thinketh, so is he”. If you think you cannot accomplish something, chances are you won’t. It is imperative that you change your mindset if you are not currently experiencing the joy of accomplishment. Most winners win because they think and believe that they can. There are no secret recipes to winning. It simply starts with your self-talk; what you constantly tell yourself about your situation. At all times maintain a positive mental attitude and you will attract positive things into your life. Believe that you can and you inevitably will.

Success is reserved for those who believe they can succeed; it’s all in your state of mind. Think BIG or don’t think at all.

Morning Cup of Joe – Gone Tomorrow

Imagine waking up to the thunderous roar of falling concrete and twisted metal only to find that the building that once provided shelter and safety was suddenly collapsing on top of you. Your extremely loud screams seem to fall on deaf ears. You are essentially entombed like an Egyptian mummy awaiting your fate. What would you do if you lost everything tomorrow? No one can predict when disaster will strike which is precisely why we must live for today.

It is imperative that you shift your focus from the pursuit of possessing worldly things to the appreciation of the world around you. Most people surround themselves with “stuff”, inanimate objects, hoping that a lifeless item will give them life. Although some people may argue differently, things cannot provide happiness. Maintain the understanding that your happiness is solely dependent upon you. It is essential that you not invest precious hours into futile pursuits.

Whether it is an unexpected earthquake that violently shakes and rattles an island, a powerful hurricane that claims the lives and worldly possessions of a state, a mudslide that reduces a multi-million dollar home into a pile of bricks and wood or a stock-market crash that turns a millionaire into a homeless person, no one is exempt from experiencing loss of any kind. With that in mind, appreciate what you have because it could all be gone tomorrow.

Morning Cup of Joe – Opportunity to Succeed

It is my unwavering belief that you have two arms so that you can use one to reach back and bring someone up with you. It is true what they say; it’s lonely at the top but it really doesn’t have to be. Understand that once we have reached a pinnacle in our lives it is imperative that we give back. When we give back, we are essentially positively affecting the life and destiny of an individual. Some people lack the necessary drive, passion and discipline required to succeed. Yet there are far more who simply lack the opportunity.

You are where you are because someone gave you a chance. Someone saw that spark in your eye as you attempted to climb the ladder towards ultimate success and they made a decision to reach out and take a chance on you. You must now pay it forward. By paying it forward, you are choosing to help others who simply lack the opportunity yet possess the characteristics of someone with great potential. Sometimes it takes others to help us discover the greatness hidden within ourselves. Don’t be afraid to take the lead and help those around you discover their greatness, especially if you’ve managed to discover yours.

I strongly believe that if you give someone an opportunity to succeed, they will almost always rise to the occasion. Most people aren’t successful because they don’t seek opportunities where they can be successful. Even when they do, those who can help influence that opportunity seldom risk it on these individuals. Why is that? It’s quite simple. Some people stop chasing their dreams once they’ve reached a red light. We all know that all red lights eventually turn green, yet very few are willing to sit and wait until it does. Simply, they give up once they have reached an impasse. It’s difficult for someone to offer you an opportunity if you are not actively seeking one. Go and get what is rightfully yours.

The only thing most people need to be successful is an opportunity. If you are in a position to offer opportunities to others, take a chance on someone who you normally wouldn’t take a chance on. If you are currently seeking opportunities to be successful, don’t give up until the opportunity you seek presents itself. If you don’t give up, it will inevitably show up.

While success is measured in many ways, I personally measure it by how many people I help get to where they are destined to be.

Morning Cup of Joe – The Dash In The Middle

Treat each day as if it were your last. I do not mean that you should use the idea of living only once as a basis for not being responsible. I am simply encouraging you to live in the present and live in the moment. There are many people who live as if tomorrow is promised. While it is important to expect the sun to rise the following day, understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to rise with it. Please understand that this is not an attempt to scare you; it is simply an attempt to wake you up.

There are only twenty-four hours in each day; eight of which are typically spent asleep. Which leaves you with a balance of sixteen and of those sixteen; eight of those hours are typically spent at your place of employment. If we check our balance, we are only left with a mere eight hours to work on making our dreams come true. How are you currently using your time? Of the things you are involved with during your eight hour balance, are they the highest and best use of your time? In a majority of cases, I would argue that the answer would be absolutely not. If you can read this, there is still hope in the future.

We did not plan the blessing which is the date of our birth and we certainly do not know when our expiration date will be. Treat yourself like a carton of milk. Typically when we buy milk we observe the date this perishable item will expire. Our goal is typically to use every drop from that carton before it expires as it will be of no use after that expiration date. Unlike milk, we are not fortunate enough to know our expiration date. However, that should not prevent us from maximizing the use of our talents, gifts and blessings to help leave our mark on the world.

The two dates that many people remember are your birth-date and your expiration date. Focus intently on the dash in the middle. What are you going to do to ensure that you are not simply wasting time while you are occupying your earth suit? It is critically important that you use your time wisely. Every day that you are blessed to see presents another opportunity to bring you closer to your dreams. It is imperative that you not reach your expiration date hoping you would have done more. There is no time like the present to ensure that you do what you can with what you have in order to have what is already meant for you.

Do not reach your expiration date prior to using every ounce of your talents and gifts. Your daily goal should be to live up to your full potential. Are you using your time wisely? Take an inventory of your time and refocus your energy on one of the most important pieces in your life; yourself.

Morning Cup of Joe – Fight or Flight

When it comes to being successful in life, all of the issues that we face bring us down to making two choices; we can either fight or we can take flight. With fighting, at least you have a chance to overcome this obstacle. However, choosing to flee from your problem doesn’t mean that it’s going to go away. It almost never does until you handle it. Our problems are designed to offer us only two possible outcomes; we can either choose to swim and stay above the water or we can allow the problem to force us to sink. Either way, they are both choices we are choosing to make. Since you now know this to be fact, choose to swim.

Choosing to swim simply means that you are not going to allow your problem to defeat you. In fact, the power we possess to change our circumstances is often handed freely to our problems. Take back control of the power you possess to change your circumstances and start finding solutions now. You have every resource you will ever need to be successful. Your greatest obstacle will always be yourself and what you allow your mind to think. A successful person’s mind always thinks of possibilities, not limitations.

Challenges in life are meant to strengthen us, if and only if we are strong enough to outlast them. It is indeed a test of endurance. You must be willing to do whatever it takes to stay above the water, even when you feel the constant tug of your problems trying to pull you under. It simply means that you must paddle harder and swim faster. Make the conscious decision to not let your problems win. With every challenge there are hidden opportunities to be better. Always search for the opportunities in your problems and shift your focus towards solution-driven thinking.

You control your destiny. You control your fate. You control your outcomes.
