Morning Cup of Joe – Actions, Not Words

If someone loves you, trust me, they’ll show you. Telling someone you love them does not take much effort, showing them does.

Above all else, love yourself first!

Morning Cup of Joe – Every Minute, Every Second

20140506-085455.jpg

Every minute, Every second

Some days I stand tall and proud as I reflect on what I accomplished in just 24 hours. There are also days, when I look at the time and realize 24 hours has passed and I have absolutely nothing to show for it; those days are the hardest. Unfortunately, it seems like I have more days when I feel I could have done more with my twenty-four.

I’ve never been a big list maker but I have found that this is the most effective way to actually stay focused on the task at hand. I’ve never been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) but I sometimes find it hard to focus on one thing at a time so I literally have to force myself to constantly review this list I created to see where I am and evaluate what I’ve accomplished.

If you’re like most people, crossing everything off of your list may never happen. One of the reasons why crossing everything off of your list may never happen is simply because you always add more things to the list. What I have found to be helpful is once I create a list to stick with that list. If I have new things let me to be added then I will create a new list. The end goal is to cross everything off of that list. There’s so much joy in crossing everything off that list. In fact there is joy and crossing one thing off that list.

Making every minute and every second count doesn’t start nor stop with creating a to-do list. it starts with focusing your mind intently on what you intend to accomplish and achieve. It starts with developing a stubborn like dedication and a freakishly disciplined mindset. It starts with a sincere desire of wanting to win. It starts when you say that you will accomplish something and not only do you believe it but you do everything in your power to maximize the time God has given you want to Earth to relentlessly pursue your dreams; that’s what making every second count means.

How many seconds out of the 86,400 seconds we have a day are you wasting doing nothing? And by doing nothing I mean spending less then 2 to 3 hours focusing on and working towards accomplishing your dreams. While you’re sitting down wasting time there someone else working twice as hard just to be better than you, faster than you, richer than you, more healthier than you and the list goes on and on. Don’t be a member of the group who is simply taking up space.

Make every minute count and every second matter.

Morning Cup of Joe – Self-Assessment

When was the last time you performed a self-assessment? Meaning, how long has it been since you sat down and took a realistic view of where you are, where you’ve been and where you are trying to go? I find myself thinking about this often asking questions like, “How can I get better?” and “What am I doing wrong?” or “What can I do differently?” If it has been a while since your last check-up, it may be time to reevaluate your situation. Interestingly enough, there are some people who have never performed a self-evaluation. This explains why their tires are turning but they are going nowhere.

Conducting a self-assessment is simple and requires a writing utensil and something to write on. In fact, you may not have access to these items depending on where you are reading this. If you are near the beach, writing in the sand works just fine. The first thing to do is to write down all of the things you would like to accomplish in the coming year then write down everything you’ve accomplished this past year. Once you have these two lists, write down the obstacles that have prevented you from reaching these goals. Finally, restructure your plan of action in order to accomplish the goals you have set.

Just like you visit your doctor for your annual check-up or your optometrist for your annual eye-exam, it is imperative that you perform an annual “Success Check-up”. Write your goals down, work on them daily and in six months to a year, perform a self-evaluation to track your progress. If you are not where you need to be, change your strategy. The end goal is to accomplish everything you listed as goals.

I never write down my “goals”, I refer to them as my “Must Outcomes”. This puts me in the mind frame that I must accomplish these goals and in most cases I do. It is so easy to start something; it’s the finishing that most of us struggle with.

Morning Cup of Joe – Complacency

20130729-222445.jpg

Attention, Attention! I need your attention for a few minutes. Time is all you have but unfortunately there is an end date. Yes, just like a carton of milk, all things expire. And the truth of the matter is we are not exempt. Well, there is good news; you do have this moment! You can choose to take control of your life right this second!

For years, I accepted things as they were; never really questioning the events around me. Never really asking any questions, sort of like many people do today. I was satisfied; yes, the dreaded “s” word. I had a great salary, great home, great friends; things were very comfortable; the dreaded “c” word. I was satisfied and comfortable; a recipe for disaster. Being comfortable causes complacency. When you are complacent, you do not leave any room for growth.

It is critically important that you don’t get complacent especially with the knowledge that all things change. Now, this message is not for everyone as many of you are perfectly content with where things are in your life. Rather, this message is for those who are no longer going to accept things as they are. This message is for those who are never satisfied and are always seeking new ways to get better.

It is perfectly normal to want the best this life has to offer. It’s not enough to want it, you have to go and get it!

Morning Cup of Joe – The Time is NOW

20130715-065842.jpg

Some people wait for signs that may never come. Sometimes we will wait for a sign to tell us that we are headed in the right direction. If that proverbial sign does not present itself, it simply means that it was meant for you to be the sign. I find it interesting how people will sit idly by waiting until they think it’s time to act before they actually do. Some people wait for a specific date and time before they decide to make the move they have been intending to make. Some people will simply wait forever. I know forever sounds like a very long time but if you are no longer on this side of the dirt, it’s difficult to affect any change.

The goal is to simply start today. After all, what are you waiting for? We have become a society of excuse creators. Most people create excuses for just about any and everything. We are all guilty of making excuses for why something may not have happened. Conversely, some even make excuses for why something happened the way it did. When we lack the motivation to do something, we will find all of the excuses in the world to ensure that we won’t do it. Instead of finding an excuse or reasons why you should not do something, subscribe to Nike’s billion dollar motto and JUST DO IT!

Do not wait until tomorrow to do something that you can do today. The time is now to start whatever it is you’re waiting on the right time to start. Truthfully, the right time may never come. The right time to act is now! Do not wait until a specific date to start something you have been wanting to start forever. The specific date that you mark on your calendar may or may not come but you do have today. The goal is to start right where you sit. The world is waiting on you! Join a movement or start one!

Don’t delay, start today!

Morning Cup of Joe – A Brilliant Mind

20130710-064426.jpg

An idea is worthless if it is trapped in your head. The only way you can profit from an idea is if you share it with the world. Most of us wait until an idea is perfect before we share it. Unfortunately for some, the idea will never be perfect enough to share. We work out the details until it is crystal clear yet continue to create flaws in the design. Take it from me; your ideas are ready for launch. If they aren’t, they simply won’t take off.

You are and always will be your worst critic. Understand that no one will scrutinize your ideas as much as you will; that’s a good thing. The fact that some of you are waiting for the “right” moment before you share your billion dollar idea simply baffles me. News Flash! There is no such thing as a perfect time to do anything. The perfect time is when you decide to act; the perfect time is now!

Your goal is to not keep your ideas to yourself; if you do, the world around you will continue to lose out on the opportunity to benefit from your brilliance. Your ideas could save lives, time and even alter the world as we know it. Imagine what life would be like if Mark Zuckerberg said, “I’ll keep facebook to myself and not share it with the world until it’s absolutely perfect”. Today, most of us cannot imagine life without facebook.

Don’t be afraid to share and execute your ideas; ask yourself, what do I have to lose? The answer will always be, nothing at all.

Morning Cup of Joe – The Time is NOW!

20130702-061200.jpg

More often than not, we waste energy on things of little to no importance. Granted many of those things may seem important to the person expending the energy but in reality it does not hold as much weight and authority as one may give them. In addition to the authority a person gives their problems, the incredible amount of energy spent on non-factors reduces the time you could be investing into resolving your issue or accomplishing a particular goal.

It is imperative that you take the initiative to organize your life today. By organize, I don’t mean have every single detail planned out; although that would be ideal. By organize; I am referring to creating a mental picture. Simply, have a clear picture of where you want to be in the future and begin working on making it a reality.Time is truly of the essence; invest more time focused on building your dream.

Once you have a clear mental picture of your desired future, you must now drill down to the details. Drilling down to the details requires you to write down clear objectives and establish “must-outcomes”. Must-outcomes are outcomes that must occur no matter what may try to stand in your way. I separate goals into two categories; desired-outcomes and must-outcomes. It is possible to accomplish goals on both lists, if you focus intently on it.

Reorganize and Reexamine Your Priorities. Accomplishing your goals takes precedence over everything else. Stop wasting time on things that don’t matter and start investing more time into building your dreams.

Morning Cup of Joe – Just Say Yes!

20130701-003912.jpg

There is extraordinary power that lies within this three letter word. If practiced, this word can open doors you had no clue even existed. The opposite of this word will yield a particular set of results; most likely unfavorable. The overuse of this word has been known to build bridges that will lead to the discovery of your dreams. The magic word I speak of is – Yes.

Saying yes to a challenge, especially if you are not prepared and/or are unaware of the details of the task at hand, tests your tenacity. You truly never know what this simple gesture will lead to but you must practice saying it more often. For the past few summers, I’ve facilitated a leadership and internship program for underprivileged youth. During one of the leadership sessions, the Vice President walks in and shouts, “I need one volunteer who can help me with a project?” Without hesitation, one student jumps up and enthusiastically says, “I’ll do it”! The young man had no clue what the project entailed but was willing to accept the challenge without that knowledge. That risk turned out to be one of the best decisions he has made in his young life. When he completed the small project and submitted it to the Vice President, he had an opportunity to speak to her about his aspirations. Once the conversation was complete, she informed him that she was a part of a group that selected students for full college scholarships and that she would like to nominate him to be a recipient of the award. He was beside himself, especially since he had no plans to attend college prior to this experience. That’s the power of Yes!

The power of yes is a simple gesture that leads to extraordinary outcomes. Learn to understand the power in that word and what it means to say it often. We all have examples where saying “yes” began a chain of events that eventually lead to a miracle. Are you committed to being the best? Do you deserve the very best life has to offer? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to get what you desire? I am convinced that you know the answer to these questions.

Morning Cup of Joe – One Man Army

20130627-071910.jpg

There may come a day when you reach out and call someone but they do not answer. There may come a day when you really need help but no one is around to hear your cry. There may come a day when you are at wits end and just need a friend but no friends are available to come to your rescue. The world can be a lonely place sometimes. When that happens, learn to depend on the only person you’ve been able to depend on your entire life; yourself.

Having to fend for yourself is not easy; trust me, I know. Obviously you can be more effective if you have “back-up” or at least one more soldier on the battlefield with you but that will not always be the case. Some battles are simply yours to fight and certainly yours to win. When you start to feel as if you are the only person who cares about your situation, although you can’t see Him, you are not alone. In essence, even if it seems as if the world has given up on you, God never will.

Learn to depend on yourself. You cannot realistically expect for others to forever be there for you during your time of need. Sometimes we have to pick ourselves up from our bootstraps, dust our shoulders off and keep on truckin’. Please understand that you are not going to enter every war with an army. There may come a time when your entire military consists of an army of one; you.

When it feels like the world has turned its back on you, walk in the understanding that you serve a God that is capable of anything. With God on your side, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Morning Cup of Joe – Who’s On Your Side?

20130626-061650.jpg

This may come as a shock to some but there are people who do not want to see you succeed. I would even go so far as to say that there are some who even pray for your failure. In some cases, these same people are disguised as friends and/or supporters; all the while they are secretly hoping that you miss your mark. I am here to tell you that their opinions don’t matter.

People are going to establish their own opinions about you, most of which are going to be negative and against you; expect it. Others may even be bold enough to publicly cheer against you. As a winner, you must learn to develop blinders that keep you focused on the task at hand and not on the ill-wishers. It is unrealistic to expect that everyone will be on your side; work as if it’s just you and God.

Although others opinions about us failing should not matter, we should use those words as motivation. You can turn any bit of information into the fuel necessary to drive you to accomplish your goals. What motivates me most is when someone believes that I can’t do something. I’ve eliminated the ‘apostrophe t’ from my vocabulary and so should you; specifically the word can’t. There will be people who will think that you cannot win and there will be people who will hope to see you lose; your only mission is to prove them wrong.

When you prove people wrong, you are proving who was right all along. The only person in control of your destiny is YOU!
