Morning Cup of Joe – 6 Rules of Success

SuccessAnyone who has ever amounted to anything became a diligent student of their craft. They learned the ins and outs of what makes someone successful in their industry. They’ve read countless books and articles on how to perfect their craft by learning from others who have been in their field and have experienced some form of wild success. As a keynote speaker it is incredibly important for me to learn from other successful speakers. My principle goal when studying successful people is to learn about the nuances of what works and what doesn’t when you’re on stage. I study other speakers as if it’s a final exam that I want so badly to ace.

While studying I received a phone call from one of my very good friends and I explained to him what I was doing. He explained how he is also a student in his craft and how he’s constantly learning about new things and how to be better at what he does. He is an engineer. He directed me towards a commencement speech given by Arnold Schwarzenegger to the graduating class at the University of Southern California where he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree. The speech is entitled “Six Rules of Success.”

Over the next several Morning Cup of Joe’s, I’m going to break down Arnold’s six rules in order to help you better apply it to your life and experience the wild success that Arnold has.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 6 Rules of Success
1) Trust yourself
2) Break the rules
3) Don’t be afraid to fail
4) Ignore the naysayers
5) Work your butt off
6) Give Back!

Here’s a link to the speech. Check it out!

Morning Cup of Joe – Follow Your Heart

Follow Your Heart

I can guarantee without a shadow of a doubt that I am not the only one who has made a decision or decisions in the past that they regret. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be negative decisions but decisions that you wish you had a second chance at or the pleasure of having a proverbial reset button. Every decision we make, wrong or right, serves a light that illuminates our path.

I maintain an unequivocal belief that we are all equipped with an incredible sense of insight and intuition; I also believe that a majority of us don’t completely trust it. I can think back to several experiences in my life where I reached a fork in the road and was forced to make a decision; I think we all can. At the time, I did not know whether the decision I inevitably made would lead me on the path I’m currently on nor did I know if it would derail me altogether, yet I made a decision and didn’t look back. At the very least, make a decision. I decided to follow my heart.

During life’s beautiful journey, you will have countless people who will want to direct your path; that’s not their job to do. It doesn’t mean they don’t know where they’re going; it simply means that they don’t know where you are going. Only you can direct your path. In these instances, it is critically important that you trust yourself. People will give you advice because it doesn’t cost them anything. You are the one who has to live with the decision, not them. I’m not saying to not seek advice, I am saying to use it sparingly. Trust that the decisions you make will ultimately be to your benefit.

In the end, you only regret the chances you didn’t take, the moves you didn’t make, and the opportunities you didn’t pursue. Follow your heart; it will never lead you down the wrong path.

Morning Cup of Joe – Have A Little Faith

20140214-070644.jpg

You may not be where you thought you’d be, but thank God you’re not where you used to be. We don’t thank Him enough for the progress we’ve made in our lives. There are so many of us who should not be here today but God sees it fit to give us an opportunity to leave a mark on the world. Don’t take His grace for granted.

Think back to a time when you either had a near death experience or a near miss; God was there. Or the time when you thought about taking your own life; God was there. Or the time when you thought you couldn’t go any further; God was there. He was there, He is here and He will never leave nor forsake you. He has proven to you time after time that He has your back; so believe in Him.

God hasn’t even begun to shower you with the overdue blessings that are meant specifically for you. First you must accept where you are today as where God wants you to be. Do not question your obstacle ladened journey, remain focused on your final destination. The fact that you are alive today is more than a blessing. God has big plans for you! Don’t stop believing that He will provide and He will never disappoint you. I am speaking from experience.

Morning Cup of Joe – Positivity 101

Some people are automatically predisposed to think negatively. They never seek to find the silver lining that surrounds the dark cloud because they are intently focused on the cloud itself. At times, it is difficult for them to understand the fact that after the rain a beautiful rainbow typically follows. The truth is some people are wired in such a way that they always think negatively. The good news is all networks are capable of being rewired.

When you focus on the positive you can do amazing things in life. The wonders of life are not reserved for a few, you too can benefit from them if you simply shift your focus from the negative to the positive. It is as simple as turning a light switch on and off. When you start thinking negatively about a particular situation, stop immediately and refocus your attention on something positive. This is not a simple task yet it is not impossible. It will take some mental conditioning to rewire your programming but it can happen if that is your desire.

Most people have difficulty understanding that the negative things that continue to occur in their lives are a direct result of the negative thoughts they harbor in their heads. Much like a computer, if you click on a negative site, your computer has a higher propensity to catch a virus and eventually shut down. Our minds work the exact same way. Negative thoughts will always create negative things. Positive thoughts create beautiful and amazing things.

You deserve the very best that life has to offer and it all starts with what you focus your mind on. At all times, focus on the positive and watch as your life begins to positively benefit from such thoughts.

Morning Cup of Joe – Order My Steps

20131120-073211.jpg

No one, no thing and no cosmic force can deny what God has specifically for you. There are times when we pray a particular prayer to receive a specific blessing yet we do nothing to meet God half-way; that is true for most people who pray. They mistakenly believe that their prayers fall on deaf ears when in actuality God is waiting on them to make the first move. Don’t pray and sit, you must move. Understand that it is difficult for God to guide your steps if you are standing still.

Prayer does in fact change things yet taking action forces the prayer to come to realization. Another key component to meeting God half-way is your belief system. You must have unwavering belief that this prayer will come true in order for it to actually come true. You must have unequivocal faith that you will realize what you are praying and hoping God to make happen. Once you pray and start working towards that which you’ve prayed for, watch how fast God works. He can only work if you believe in your heart of hearts that He is able. Believe me, He is able.

No matter your circumstances, God can and will bring you through if you believe that He can. In my own journey, I have been fortunate to realize the power of God and I can almost guarantee that you too can share your testimonies. If He came through for you before, He is able to do it again. If He has helped you to believe that miracles can happen, He is capable of doing it again. Remember, what God has for you is for you. Believe that God can and He will never disappoint you.

Morning Cup of Joe – Believe in Yourself

20131107-080612.jpg

It is unreasonable to expect others to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself first. That’s like expecting to win the lottery when you don’t even play. The world responds to us reciprocally. Simply, what we put out into the universe is exactly what we should expect to receive. If the world isn’t responding to you favorably, there must be something that you aren’t doing right. Examine and analyze the man in the mirror. Chances are that’s where the problem lies.

If we lack the necessary confidence required to succeed, we cannot blame anyone but ourselves. Some people live for compliments and think that they will die if they don’t receive them. Your goal should be to eliminate the need for others to accept you. Accept how God made you and work with the gifts you’ve been blessed with. Stop depending on others for validation. Besides, what others think about you is none of your business.

Commit to memory that confidence is something that can be learned. No one is born with a high level of self-confidence. Self-confidence is typically acquired through personal accomplishments and achievements. It is also necessary that you understand that your self-talk is critical to your self-worth. Avoid self-doubt and take calculated risks; two key ways to increase your self-confidence.

Believe in yourself and the rest of the world won’t have a choice but to follow suit.

Morning Cup of Joe – Walking With Purpose

20131011-075808.jpg

You’re probably like most people who begin their day by repeatedly pressing the snooze button. Am I right? The blaring and sometimes startling sound of the alarm clock certainly adds to the negative reception of the morning. After several grueling minutes and the inevitable end to the battle between you and your alarm clock, you finally drag yourself out of bed. You have officially started your day on the wrong foot.

How you start may not always determine how you finish but that should not prevent you from starting strong. The sooner you realize that you are in control of how you receive the day, the sooner you can start your day with purpose. Wake up and be thankful. Wake up and receive the day as an opportunity to get closer to achieving your dreams. Wake up and greet the day with enthusiasm.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift; that’s why it’s called the present.” Unwrap the gift that is today and start walking with purpose. It is difficult to reach a particular destination if you aren’t sure if you even want to go. Live a life that’s full by walking in the understanding that your blessing is right around the corner; meet it half-way.

The first step is taking the first step.

Morning Cup of Joe – Stock Value

20131010-073038.jpg

No one in the world possesses the power to make you better, only you can do that. No one in the world has the ability to tear you down unless you give them permission. There isn’t a soul in the entire universe who can upgrade you; you alone are responsible for your own upgrades. Stop trying to determine your value based on what others think and feel about you. What others think about you is none of your concern.

Where you are today is where you have chosen to be. Certainly our circumstances have something to do with it but I strongly believe that the individual choices we’ve made up to this point is exactly what has gotten us this far. Most of us are where we are by choice not by circumstance. Good choices yield good results. Bad choices, well you know exactly the repercussions of your bad choices and how far those poor choices have gotten you.

At all times focus on self-improvement. Always ask yourself, “How can I get better?”. After a loss, any loss, we must examine why we experienced this loss. We must try to understand where we went wrong and what we are willing to do to improve ourselves so that we don’t continue to experience similar results. Start taking more responsibility for your current circumstances. After all, it is the choices that you’ve chosen to make, good or bad, that has lead you to where you currently are.

Stop allowing others to determine the value of your life; take back the control you have freely given to others. You deserve nothing but the best, don’t you?

Morning Cup of Joe – God’s Will

20131009-073243.jpg

If you believe in a higher power it is imperative that you seek assistance from that power as often as you can. The assistance I speak of comes in the form of directions. For example, before you travel to a place you’ve never been before, you typically find, print and follow those directions. While many of us will blindly drive without directions and may eventually reach our destination, it is much simpler to find and/or ask for directions. God works the same way.

Understand that some destinations aren’t meant for you to travel to; that is implicitly why you haven’t been able to get there. Understand that God has a plan for your life and His plan will always trump yours. Some of you have tried to run from your calling and many others try to outright deny it. Some people are foolish enough to think that they are directing their own path. The sooner you realize that God is in control, the sooner you’ll reach the destination He has already planned for you. Let Him take the wheel.

Take a moment right now to choose to get out of your own way. Simply, don’t lose sight of who is directing your path. All you have to do is continue to walk and the signs will become clearer. Ask God to lead the way. One of the most difficult things to do is to transfer the power you thought you had to the one who had it all along; recognize who is in charge. I once heard that if you want to humor God, make plans. Do not be misled; I am not suggesting that you go through life without a plan. I am suggesting that you not try to force your plan into action, especially if all of the signs are pointing you in a different direction.

Get out of your own way and allow God to direct your path. Understand that His will must be done, not yours.

Morning Cup of Joe – Why Worry?

20130926-070223.jpg

This message is written especially for you. You who woke up this morning and fell asleep with “it” on your mind. On your long traffic filled ride to work, it remains on your mind. The clock is nearing noon and your lunch break presents another opportunity to invest countless hours into your problems. All you do all day is worry about your problems. I’m here to tell you that worrying will not offer any solutions.

Worrying is counterproductive. While worrying may serve as a step towards the discovery of a solution, you should consider skipping it. The more time you spend worrying about a problem, the less time you’ll have to devote to finding your solution. The lack of faith many show after they pray for an answer is very interesting; you pray then you worry then you hope. The odds of discovering a solution using this method is virtually impossible. Refocus your energy on what matters most; you.

Many people have the solution at their disposal but lack the necessary discipline to execute it. They make it pass the worry stage, breeze through the possible solutions step and stop at the final stage; execution. You must not only think you must also act. Action is required in order to ensure a desired outcome. And just like that, while you are working, your breakthrough will meet you half-way. It truly is that simple. Stop worrying and start working.

When you genuinely believe in a desired outcome worrying becomes futile.
