Morning Cup of Joe – A Life Without Regrets

Life This message is inspired by the book “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying” by Bronnie Ware. This book is especially important because it focuses on people who have lived their lives and are at their final days when they start to do some serious introspection and self-evaluation. What excites me about this study is the fact that these folks were willing to share their regrets. And by sharing their regrets, it is imperative that we use them as teachable moments to ensure that we don’t experience these same doubts.

Here are the five regrets.
1) I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
2) I wish I hadn’t work so hard.
3) I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.
4) I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
5) I wish I had let myself be happier.

Of these five regrets of the dying, one of them stood out to me more than the others and also happens to be the most common regret of all; “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” It truly takes courage to live a life that’s pleasing to God and not to your fellow man. I think it’s fair to say that when people realize that their life is almost over and look back on it that it’s much easier to see how many dreams went unfulfilled, how many friends you lost along the way and how in the end nothing really matters except for the people who love you and the people you love.

I made a commitment to myself that I will not be one of those people who chooses to live a life filled with regrets and unfulfilled promises. I made a commitment that I wouldn’t give the best years of my life to forwarding someone else’s mission and vision. I’d rather spend the rest of my life chasing my dreams then chasing someone else’s.

In the end, love is all that will matter. Don’t get caught up in the daily grind where you lose your real reason for living. Trophies will eventually tarnish, the ink on all of those degrees and certificates will eventually wear off and money runs out. All of that “stuff” really doesn’t matter. You won’t be spending your last days wishing you had worked more hours. In the end, you’ll be left with the ones you love and the ones who love you.

Morning Cup of Joe – A Life of Purpose

While scanning through the new releases on Netflix, I realized that one of the greatest movies of all time, in my humble opinion, was listed. With much excitement and anticipation, I selected it and began watching. One of the more powerful scenes early in the movie is captured in a conversation had by Marcus Aurelius and Caesar. While this movie is riddled with memorable quotes, one stood out more than the others.

Marcus Aurelius turns to Caesar and says, “When a man sees his end, he wants to know that there was some purpose to his life.” I pressed paused then rewind on the remote control so that I could hear it again. I started thinking to myself, why wait until a man sees his end? Why not make his life purposeful while he can?

So many of us are waiting for the right time to follow our purpose, while others are waiting for the right sign. I’m here to tell you that the right time doesn’t exist and the right sign may never happen. You must take control of your destiny. Don’t wait until your life has passed before you begin to reflect on it, START NOW! We all want to live a life filled with purpose; at least I believe we do.

We don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring nor do we know if we will be fortunate enough to meet it. What we do know is that you have complete control over today! Do you want to wake up one day and wonder where all the time has gone? Do you want to wake up one day wondering what you have to show for your time spent on earth? Or do you want to wake up at the end of your days and KNOW that you lived a life of purpose?

If you want to live a life filled with purpose, first you must decide to relentlessly follow your dreams. Discover what is most meaningful to you and vigorously pursue it. I have discovered my purpose in life which is to enrich and embolden the lives of others by using my God given gifts and talents. What’s yours?

Morning Cup of Joe – The Sun Rise

Treat each day as if it were your last. I do not mean that you should use the idea of living only once as a basis for not being responsible. I am simply encouraging you to live in the present and live in the moment. There are many people who live as if tomorrow is promised. While it is important to expect the sun to rise the following day, understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to rise with it. Please understand that this is not an attempt to scare you; it is simply an attempt to wake you up.

There are only twenty-four hours in each day; eight of which are typically spent asleep. Which leaves you with a balance of sixteen and of those sixteen; eight of those hours are typically spent at your place of employment. If we check our balance, we are only left with a mere eight hours to work on making our dreams come true. How are you currently using your time? Of the things you are involved with during your eight hour balance, are they the highest and best use of your time? In a majority of cases, I would argue that the answer would be absolutely not. If you can read this, there is still hope in the future.

We did not plan the blessing which is the date of our birth and we certainly do not know when our expiration date will be. Treat yourself like a carton of milk. Typically when we buy milk we observe the date this perishable item will expire. Our goal is typically to use every drop from that carton before it expires as it will be of no use after that expiration date. Unlike milk, we are not fortunate enough to know our expiration date. However, that should not prevent us from maximizing the use of our talents, gifts and blessings to help leave our mark on the world.

The two dates that many people remember are your birth-date and your expiration date. Focus intently on the dash in the middle. What are you going to do to ensure that you are not simply wasting time while you are occupying your earth suit? It is critically important that you use your time wisely. Every day that you are blessed to see presents another opportunity to bring you closer to your dreams. It is imperative that you not reach your expiration date hoping you would have done more. There is no time like the present to ensure that you do what you can with what you have in order to have what is already meant for you.

Do not reach your expiration date prior to using every ounce of your talents and gifts. Your daily goal should be to live up to your full potential. Are you using your time wisely? Take an inventory of your time and refocus your energy on one of the most important pieces in your life; yourself.

Morning Cup of Joe – New Beginnings

No matter what you’ve been through or are currently going through it does not have to stay like that. While some of our problems may be the result of our circumstances, a majority of those problems are a result of the sum of our choices. We have all made questionable decisions and poor judgment calls in the past. Those decisions and choices are exactly why we are where we are today.

If you truly want to change your circumstances, you have to first believe that change is possible. Secondly, you must be willing to start from where you are right now. Lastly, you must be committed to that change. Understand that we place many of our perceived limitations on ourselves by not acknowledging the fact that others with similar situations have found a way out. Guess what? Your way out is possible if you follow a similar path. If you follow the path of a successful person, you will get similar results.

Did you know that there are others like you who have experienced turmoil? While your issue may seem like the biggest one in the world, you are not alone. Did you know that most successful people have one main thing in common; they never give up. They keep moving and working tirelessly until they reach their desired results. As long as you are not willing to quit and commit to being successful, it can and will happen. There is truly no time like the present. Take advantage of the days you are blessed to see.

Don’t wait until tomorrow to get what you know you deserve today. The change you seek happens when you decide enough is enough. If you can read this, it’s not too late. In fact, it’s never too late. Everyone has to start somewhere. When will you decide to start?

Morning Cup of Joe – Expiration

When the end is finally here and you face your final curtain, before you exit the stage, what do you want to be remembered for? That is one of the toughest questions to think about especially as it relates to passing on. What do you want others to say about you when it is all said and done? What will they say? What are you going to do about it now to ensure that your memory lives on?

Some people are very comfortable talking about death and I must admit I am not one of them. Yet I would be remised if I did not help you understand the importance of living life the way God intended you to live. Since the inception of this new understanding, my principle focus has remained on how I can improve my life and the lives of those around me while I am still here to do it. Simply, how can I make every single day count and use my limited time wisely. Each day presents another opportunity to provide answers to these questions.

Please understand that while death is inevitable, living certainly is not. Just because you were born doesn’t mean you’re living. In fact, just because you are alive doesn’t mean you are living either; there is a distinct difference between the two. Understand that people are perishable items with expiration dates much like the items on your grocery list. The goal should be to get maximum use of those perishables prior to their expiration date; your life included. Maximize your full potential and do things you have always wanted to do; visit places you have always wanted to see; commit yourself to experiencing new experiences and learning new things. Your life is worth living; start living today.

Life is truly what you make it. Be sure to make it what it should be before your expiration date.

Morning Cup of Joe – Calling Me Names

It baffles me how upset some people get when another person, in some cases complete strangers, refer to them in a name outside of their given names. It is inexplicable how some people allow others to control their emotions. While some people may not get upset if they are called a name, I certainly understand why someone would react this way. Early on in my quest for peace and understanding, I allowed others to control my emotions by reacting hastily. After plenty of practice, I now maintain complete control over my emotions. I repeat, plenty of practice.

What others call us will only hurt us if we accept the name as our own. People will speak ill into the atmosphere attempting to pierce your core by referring to you in a manner unbecoming of a cordial person. W.C. Fields said it best, “It ain’t what they call you; it’s what you answer to.” It is critically important that you understand implicitly what Mr. Fields is trying to say here. Do not debase yourself to the names people call you; you are under no obligation to accept them.

By virtue of the simple fact that you are on your way to the top, people will talk about you, lie on you, and certainly call you names; you do not have to answer to any of them. Since people are going to call you names anyway, be sure that one of the names they call you is “successful”.

Understand that you will face obstacles like these along the way; the challenge is how you will choose to respond to them. Your response should be one that does not compromise the incredible person you are. Each time think about your response before you respond. Walk in the understanding that you were born to win and winning isn’t easy but it can become a habit if you practice it daily.

The next time someone is foolish enough to call you something you’re clearly not, remember you are not what they call you if you don’t answer to it.

Morning Cup of Joe – Best Things In Life

We live in a world where the value of things is greater than the value we place in people. As a society, we are increasingly shifting priorities from the days of old when we focused on strengthening family values to how many friends one can amass on Facebook. We are hooked on reality shows, computer gadgets and the monthly release of the newest version of the iPhone. We spend an innumerable amount of hours in front of the television thirsting over things we think we need in our lives and most of the time cannot afford. We have allowed our things to define us. It’s time for a change.

First understand that you are not your stuff. Your things are just that, things. Simply, you are defined by what you do with what you have not just what you have. Unfortunately, many people share different views. We are wrapped in a culture that promotes excess and a thought process that subscribes to “it will never be enough” attitude. Don’t believe me? How many pairs of shoes do you currently own? Certainly more than one yet that doesn’t prevent us from buying the next one we “have to have”. It is puzzling how some people own over a hundred pairs of shoes yet they only have two feet. Think about it.

Awards eventually tarnish, the ink on certificates and diplomas eventually wear off and new cars do eventually break down. Understand that your stuff can always be replaced but you cannot be. Know that you can always buy new things but there is not a price you can put on the value of your life. You can have all the land in the world and still be homeless. It is a fact that the best things in life aren’t things. I encourage you to refocus on what’s most important in this world, YOU!

Morning Cup of Joe – Time For A Change

“But that’s how it’s always been done”, “I just don’t want to go through this again”, “Things will never be the same”; these are examples of the self-talk many people have about experiencing change. Most people fear the unknown for the same reasons they should embrace it. The fact that you cannot determine the future should be comforting simply because you should accept the things you cannot change nor affect. Conversely, accept the fact that you are equipped with the necessary tools to handle any type of change. We do not know what changes will come about in our lives but we must embrace them or risk being left behind. Change happens.

You have been down this road before and stared at the same street sign, this time make the right decision. It baffles me how many people stay in horrible situations simply because they have not figured out how they can survive outside of that situation. You are in control; plan then execute. What happened to the fight that was in you before you got into this situation? What happened to your “Not Me, Not Ever” speech? Exercise your right to understand that you have alternatives. Being miserable is truly a choice. Since we now know this as fact, choose to live a life worth living; even if it means starting over. The greatest difference between living the life you were meant to live and the life you are choosing to live now is a matter of personal choices.

The Civil Rights Movement brought about positive change in America. The road was long, the task arduous and the mission seemingly impossible yet these brave souls were committed to change, even if it meant their lives. Are you willing to die for something you believe in? Imagine a world where the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Winston Churchill and Gandhi simply accepted things as they were and did not champion change.

Change is good, especially if you take advantage of the incredible amount of opportunity that comes with it. You should strive to stay prepared as you never know when you will experience change but be certain that it will inevitably happen. It is not a question of “if” change will happen in our lives; it’s a question of “when”. Be prepared and commit to memory the fact that you don’t have to get ready if you stay ready.

This is a New Day and the world welcomes the New You! There is nothing wrong with pressing the reset button if the system freezes.

Morning Cup of Joe – Life Is Too Short

The motivation behind this message is a text message my sister sent to our entire family. At first, I didn’t know the basis behind her text but she later shared. She mentioned how a co-worker of hers had passed on unexpectedly and how important it was to forgive. The message read “If you have anyone you know you’re holding a grudge against, please let it go and forgive them.”

We all have someone or some past event that is adding extra weight to our lives due to the fact that we have not forgiven them. It is critically important that you learn how to forgive and forget in order to move forward. If you do not forgive someone who has done you wrong or mistreated you in the past, you will continue to be stagnant. You cannot turn to a new chapter if you haven’t read the previous one completely nor can you move on if you don’t turn the page. Simply, you cannot fully move on with your life if you haven’t determined nor completely dealt with what has been holding you back in the first place.

One of the most difficult things to do in life is to forgive. What’s even more challenging is to forget how someone has hurt you. Once you build up enough nerve to forgive someone, only then can you start living a more free & fruitful life. Some folks may argue that forgetting is much easier than forgiving and I there is some truth to that. However, forgetting takes little to no effort yet in still the issue remains and has not been resolved. In fact, it is possible to forgive someone and they never even know about it. You can forgive by choosing to let go of the past and forgiving all those who have trespassed against you.

The reason why you have not hit the next level is because you are holding on to the memory of someone from your past who has done you wrong. Let go of that right now today. Forgive them for their wrong doings. Forgive all those people who came in and out of your life and added no value. Forgive everyone who thought you would never amount to anything. Forgive those people who didn’t realize how special you truly are. Forgive and you will find that a more fruitful life awaits you.

Some people may say that there are certain things that are unforgivable and I disagree completely. There are certain things that may seem unforgivable, but your heart should never be one of those. Choose to forgive today because life is too short to hold grudges.

Morning Cup of Joe – First Day of Your Life

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Today and each day, spend time thinking about of all the things in your life you are thankful for. Be sure to focus on the non-materialistic reasons you are thankful; family, a great career, a wonderful spouse, etc. Today, I want you to think about all of the sacrifices you have made in your life to this point in order to get to where you are today. Today I want you to walk around with a renewed spirit while you express gratitude for the incredible progress you’ve made to this point in your life.

Today I want you to think about why you are here. Most people will continue to take up precious space while others like you and I will continue to discover and live our purpose. If you are having trouble figuring out your purpose in life, you must simply answer one question; “What am I able to do that is effortless to me while I can use it to serve others?” Answer this question and you will be one step closer to discovering your purpose. Your purpose also has to do with doing what you love. When you do what you love and love what you do, wealth comes in abundance. Today I want you to focus on discovering your purpose.

Today I want you to place emphasis on your gifts. Your gifts and/or unique abilities are ones that come naturally. Today I want you to focus on what you were born to do. It is my belief that you were born to leave your mark on the world. It’s not enough that I believe it, what do you believe? We truly only have one life to live so you must make this one count. Believe it or not, there are very good reasons why you are still on this side of the dirt; your purpose has not yet been fulfilled. Trust and understand that your life has meaning and watch as it begins to unfold once you decide to take the first step toward that discovery.

Who besides Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Mother Teresa and countless others are going to leave their mark on this world? Today, I ask, who else will join the ranks of these great avatars? Today I want you to stand up and add your name to the list.

Today is all we’ve got; Live it!
