Morning Cup of Joe – It’s a Small World

Explore I think back to a conversation I had while living in Houston with an individual who’d never travelled more than five miles outside of where they were born. According to them, they really did not have any reason to explore or travel outside of their comfort zone. The elementary school, middle school and high school they attended are all within a 3 mile radius from their home. This person grew up in a small town which may explain to some degree why they never had a desire to leave. It could also explain why so many others do.

I’ve never been one to sit around and wonder what’s on the other side of the wall. I would much rather climb the wall and find out for myself. I guess you can say I have always been curious about the world around me, even as a child. I’m glad that I have not lost my childlike curiosity because this is truly what motivates me to learn more and maintain a sense of fearlessness.

Think about it for a second. Most children exhibit no fear because they don’t know what fear is. They will test their boundaries, test their limits and if you have any, they’ll also test yours. The fear of the unknown will either restrict you from learning about something that you would otherwise never have an opportunity to learn or it will broaden your horizons by introducing you to elements that you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to. Dare to step out of your own way.

When was the last time you traveled to another state or country? When was the last time you dared to figure out what was on the other side of the wall? When was the last time you were out of your comfort zone? A winner will always have an issue with being comfortable simply because we’re always looking for ways to better ourselves. Comfort is the cousin of laziness.

There is a beautiful world out there waiting to be explored by you. There are perfect strangers out there waiting with baited breath to start a conversation with you. There are cultures that would embrace you as one of their own. There is a life that’s worth enriching through experiences gained through traveling and exploring. You can learn so much from reading but there is no substitute for real-life experience. The Eiffel tower in person is much more breathtaking than any picture can capture.

I’ve studied abroad in Spain and Russia and my life hasn’t been the same as a result of these experiences. I traveled to Haiti after the devastating earthquake to bring resources to my family and their community. I have driven cross-country from Los Angeles, California to Orlando, Florida. I’ve travelled to almost every continent except Australia & Antarctica but they’re on the list. And on almost every one of these trips I tried to talk myself out of going by creating a myriad of excuses like not having enough money, bad timing or the fact that I didn’t have one connection in some of these countries. These excuses came because I was stuck in my comfort zone. I decided to step out on faith and just do it. Some of the best decisions of my life.

There is a trip you’ve been putting off for whatever reason, stop thinking about it and just go! The world is waiting for you.

Morning Cup of Joe – Choose Wisely

To me, it is a little disturbing to think about the substantial amount of people who simply accept things as they are. Going about their day without a care in the world; satisfied with their mediocrity. If you are going to be anything in this world, you cannot be comfortable with the status quo. Don’t be misled, some people are perfectly fine with where they are and are not interested in advancing. That’s simply their prerogative which they’re entitled to. While I have a serious issue with this, I am fully aware that we are all responsible for ourselves.

For a long time in my life I accepted things as they were hoping they would get better. After I realized that this method of thinking and acting was not getting me anywhere, I decided to start demanding things. The one thing that remains constant is the cordiality that exists with my every demand. Before you can demand anything, you must first be confident in knowing what you want; be clear. Once you are clear on what you want, you will be more discerning as it relates to your options. Basically, you won’t be so quick to accept just anything and you shouldn’t.

This is also true in the relationships that we forge. If you are with someone who is not treating you the way you are supposed to be treated, reevaluate your situation and create an exit strategy immediately. The fact of the matter is; you deserve better than what you are currently choosing to accept. Make smart decisions and wise choices that benefit you in the long run. Remember that life’s journey is all about the choices we make; choose wisely.

Morning Cup of Joe – From Start to Finish

20130816-073659.jpg

When things are meant to be, it seems as if all of the pieces start to magically fall into place. There is a test that I used to conduct just to test this theory and see if it’s true; I have never been disappointed. I first start by picking a start date, an end date and sticking firmly to both of them. Next I commit myself to ensuring that everything is in place so my desired outcomes happen on the specific date I choose, if not before. Then, almost like magic, all of the other pieces start coming together almost seamlessly.

Oftentimes, we ignore the obvious signs that are pointing us in a different direction. This happens when we try to force a square peg into a round hole; it simply won’t fit. Learn to quickly recognize which steps are ordained and which ones are not. You will know if what you’re doing is the right thing to do if you experience very little resistance or obstacles along the way.

I firmly believe that God wants to see His children succeed. I seriously doubt we were placed on this earth to fail. Walk in the understanding that God’s got your back. Work on creating a plan of action then work even harder on the execution of this plan. If you start, God will help you finish.

Morning Cup of Joe – Results May Vary

20130726-065320.jpg

He stands in front of the mirror wondering if anything has changed or improved. Staring at himself intently, he starts to imagine what the final results will look like. He wishes there was some magic button he could press that would magically place the muscles where they perfectly fit but unfortunately that button hasn’t yet been invented. The actual twenty minutes felt like a twenty days as he wondered why he wasn’t seeing any immediate results.

We have all been down this road before; you’re doing the right things, working as hard as you can and feel as if you should be seeing results sooner than you actually have. It is critically imperative that you learn to develop the patience of a turtle and the determination of a starving lion hunting for prey in order to be successful. This combination will undoubtably produce immaculate results. In addition to patience and determination, you must learn to develop the work ethic of a champion. If you ask any world class athlete or Olympian what it takes to be great, they will tell you practice and discipline. While some Olympians are born with natural gifts, the other 99% practices until it is perfect then they practice some more.

What the man in the mirror is not considering is the immense amount of time, effort, discipline and dedication it takes to produce incredible results. Some things can happen overnight but the only thing that comes to my mind is sleep. It is important that you set realistic expectations that you are able to exceed. It will take hard work, dedication, persistence, patience and patience. Yes, you need that much patience. Take it from me, the breakthrough and/or goal you are attempting to reach will come to fruition in due time; you cannot rush success. Remain steadfast and committed to accomplishing your goals, whatever they may be.

Remember to appreciate the journey, especially since you already know the final destination. The only thing you can do is take it one day at a time. Sooner than later, you will win. It may not be tomorrow but it will happen if you stay committed.

Morning Cup of Joe – Free At Last

20130401-065715.jpg

It is unreasonable to expect people to believe in your dreams and be more passionate about them than you are. The world around you is filled with dream killers. There are people who simply don’t want to see you succeed. The fact is, misery loves company and if you don’t succeed you will be miserable and if you are miserable you will be keeping a lot of company. If keeping company means failing then I’d rather be alone. It’s true what they say, it is very lonely at the top but there’s plenty of room up here.

Even if there are those who don’t want to see you succeed, succeed anyway. Reach as far towards the sky as you can then reach a thousand miles higher. Create goals so big that even you would be amazed if you reached them. You can achieve what your mind can conceive. How committed are you towards making your dreams come true? There will always be people who doubt you, even those closest to you. The only person responsible for your success is you, stop pointing fingers. If you don’t succeed it’s nobody’s fault but your own. Winners take full responsibility for their actions. You can’t expect others to be passionate about your dreams if you aren’t passionate in your pursuit of achieving them.

As a dream seeker and a person who accomplishes goals, it is imperative that you keep your eyes on the prize. Your focus should be laser-like similar to a racehorse in the Kentucky Derby. Those horses have blinders to restrict them from all of the distractions and other racehorses around them. What is going on to your left, your right and even behind you is none of your concern. At all times focus on your dreams and pursue them with vigorous passion. There is no greater joy than accomplishing a goal and seeing your dreams come true. Your dreams are meant to bring you freedom. Follow your dreams, find your freedom.

Morning Cup of Joe – Decisions, Decisions

Every decision isn’t going to be the right decision. No matter the outcome you have to live with it. I have met people who were afraid to make decisions solely based on the fact that they were unsure of the inevitable outcomes. Let me be the first to tell you that it is imperative that you not allow fear to keep you from pursuing anything, especially your dreams. Fear is a feeling we create in our minds of perceived setbacks that may not even exist. If anything, allow the fear and anxiety you experience to become the fuel that powers you to push forward.

You aren’t going to be right 100% of the time. You may have to try something several times before you get it right. You will make mistakes. You will experience failure. The greatest difference between yourself and a person who is wildly successful is simply the fact that the person who is wildly successful did not give up on their hopes and dreams. Sometimes we think that a setback means that we shouldn’t be doing a certain thing. It’s the exact opposite. Every time you are met with adversity, it simply means that you are headed in the right direction.

On this journey towards success and self-fulfillment you will inevitably run into roadblocks, speed bumps, and various obstacles. Much like when you are driving an actual car and you encounter these obstructions, you try to find a way around them in order to get to your final destination. Life and accomplishing your dreams work the same way. You have to be willing to move pass any obstacle, push through any road block and search for alternate routes or ways of arriving at your desired outcome.

If you make a mistake, work on ensuring that the chances of it reoccurring are slim to none. If you veer off the road and simply took your eyes off of your goal, simply remember who is in control, grab that wheel and refocus. If you still want to be as successful as you should be, if you can read this, there’s plenty of time if you choose today to refocus on what’s most important.

Decide right now what it is you want out of life and go and claim what is rightfully yours.

Morning Cup of Joe – Direct Your Own Path

Are you the captain of your ship and the master of your soul? Do you direct your own path or do you count on others to direct you? Do you make your own decisions or are the decisions that affect your life based on what others think you should do? Aside from assistance from a trained professional, not only is it wise but it would behoove you to make your own decisions. After all, you have to live with the outcome not the person directing you.

Advice is free which is precisely why most people seek it and most people give it. We all know that you get what you pay for. Hence, if you aren’t paying for the advice you are seeking, how much value could that advice have? Do not be misled; some advice is priceless and can certainly come from someone who is not a professional but you should certainly limit those options to people who have “been there and done that”. Most people seek advice from people who have never even been in their specific situation. That’s like asking someone to guide you through a path they’ve never traveled themselves.

Unlimited power comes from your ability to direct your own path. There is a decision that you are keeping from making perhaps because you are not sure what the outcome could be. I submit to you that you will never know until you make the first move. Stop asking others and make a decision, now, today. There are clear benefits and consequences to every decision you make. The only person that should be thinking for you is you. In short, make your own decisions and live by them. Your own two feet are the only ones that can direct your path.

Think for yourself.

Morning Cup of Joe – Have What It Takes

When you set out to accomplish a goal it is critically important that you stick with it and see it through to completion. Now, re-read the first sentence a few more times. Most of the time when we take the initiative to start something, it is almost certain that we are going to be met with obstacles; some of which we cannot avoid. The goal is to simply focus on what matters most; finishing and finishing strong. Remember, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters most.

It costs you absolutely nothing to create a goal nor does it cost you to have the desire to pursuit a dream. The cost that you must consider when you are attempting to make your dreams come true is the price you are willing to pay to make certain that they do. Sweat equity is what you must be willing to invest in order to see a positive end result. Your goals are truly an arm’s reach away but you cannot get to them if you’re sitting down. Stand up and chase your dreams. Do not stop until you get them and even after that, keep going.

The road to success will seem long and at times bumpy but commit to memory the fact that you were born to win. I firmly believe that you were not put on this earth to lose. You were put on this earth to make an impact on the world around you. We all have a purpose in life; the goal is to discover yours then share it with the world. Do not think about the journey, simply focus on the destination. It doesn’t matter how you get there, just get there.

Remember, anyone can set a goal but it takes a winner to complete one.

Morning Cup of Joe – The Three Tests

If you want to know if the path you are currently following will lead you to your hearts desires, there are a few things I will share with you to help you easily determine. I call them the three tests. The first thing to look for is the ease at which things start to fall into place. When it is the right thing, the universe makes adjustments on your behalf to ensure that your path is clear. Conversely, when you are heading down the wrong path you will be met with intense opposition. Do not be misled, sometimes the opposition you face does not necessarily mean that you are headed down the wrong path. Simply, you may have to drive through the fog in order to see a little clearer.

The second test relates to time and patience. If it is meant to be than it will be and there is nothing that you or anyone or anything can do to prevent it from happening. What you wish for today may not come tomorrow but it doesn’t mean that it will never come. That is where the patience comes into play. If you believe in your heart of hearts that something is possible then it absolutely will be. Much like God, it may not come when you want it but it will always be on time. There are things that may have to occur before you receive your blessing. Remain patient as the obstacles in your path are being cleared so that you may continue on your journey with ease.

The final test deals with feeling. You know that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you are about to do something big. We are all equipped with an internal radar detector built to detect when something feels right and when something feels wrong; always trust your gut. There is nothing stronger than your intuition. Think of a time when your intuition or that inner-voice led you out of danger or into an opportunity. It happens to me all the time. I not only listen to my inner-voice, I trust it. You will know if it is right because you will be able to feel it deep down in your soul.

These three tests can be applied to every aspect of your life, from relationships to opportunities. Understand that with time, patience, your gut feeling and the universe working on your behalf anything is possible. Believe it then see it.

Morning Cup of Joe – The First Day

You may not believe this but today is the first day of the rest of your life. Today you can choose to start taking advantage of this thing called life. Today you can start to use your time wisely. What you do with the time you have on Earth is essential to your success. Whether our time on Earth is predestined or not, we are not afforded the luxury of knowing the exact date we will be called home. Even if we did, I wonder how many people would be more focused on the task at hand. I wonder how many people would actually use their time to make a difference in the world. It is imperative that you use your time wisely. Make every minute count and every second matter. Understand that you are in control of how you budget your 24 hours. More importantly, do not waste precious limited time on frivolous and meaningless activities.

Often times we allow ourselves to make the critical mental error of thinking we have more time than we actually do. This assumption is simply based on my observation of the world around me. There are folks whose actions dictate that they may possibly have access to a time machine of sorts. They live each day as if tomorrow is promised. I often hear people say things like, “I will get to it tomorrow” or “When I have more time, I’ll focus on that”. The fact of the matter is we do not know for certain when our clocks will expire which is more reason why should choose to maximize each days potential.

Your perception of time should be one of immediacy and urgency. Every step should have pep in it. Stop walking around as if time is not of the essence. Stop acting as if your tomorrows are certain; the wisest among us knows that tomorrows aren’t promised. There is no time for foolishness; the time to focus on your dreams and pursue them with vigorous passion is now. Your time is not to be wasted on issues that are miniscule or futile. We certainly make time for things that we deem important in our lives. Make succeeding as important as breathing and watch as your dreams start to come true. If you want a better life, start investing time into ensuring that you will have one and you inevitably will.

We only have one life to live; this is not a dress rehearsal.
