Morning Cup of Joe – Born To Die

As I sat on the tourist filled train patiently yet eagerly awaiting my stop, I put my book down and took a moment to inspect my surroundings to see who my temporary neighbors were. To my immediate left a new couple embrace as they lovingly stare into each others eyes. Behind them an elderly man focuses intently on the stories of the day written in a semi-crumpled newspaper someone left behind as an unruly and clearly unsupervised child raced up and down the center isle of the pod.

Sitting directly across from me is a man, seemingly tired from a long days work as he unsuccessfully attempts to take a quick nap before he reaches his final destination. His weathered uniform with dusted flour stains and slightly worn cap deduced that he must be a line cook at a restaurant. What stood out most about this man was an abnormally large tattoo scribed from to the top of his forearm all the way down to where his wristwatch would normally go in a dark green hue that read “Born To Die.”

As I looked momentarily trying to avoid being caught staring, I started to wonder why anyone would get a permanent reminder of something so dreadful and uninspiring? I started to think about what his life-experiences must have been to motivate him to get this “message” tattooed on himself. How bad does life get for you to think and even believe that you were in fact born to die?

While death is a guaranteed experience that we all grudgingly yet inevitably share, I am not entirely convinced that it is something we should remind ourselves of daily. Our focus should remain on maximizing the beauty, opportunities and blessings each day presents. I truly believe that our thoughts have the incredible power to become things. I also believe that there is an immeasurable amount of power in the written word and the message you continue to drill into your head.

You create the reality in which you exist. If you want the best life has to offer, you must first believe that you deserve it then go and create it. The world has the potential to give you constant reminders that you simply dont measure up. Dont allow a third party to run your private corporation! In other words, OWN YOUR DESTINY!

Morning Cup of Joe – Living In The Past

20131126-073600.jpg

This may come as a surprise to some but to my knowledge there is no time machine that has yet been invented. We all dream about going back to the future and hopefully fixing something we played a part in breaking. In many cases, we hope yet never act on finishing something we started. This is the unfortunate plight of many people who fail to understand that you cannot change the past; all you can do is learn from it and apply those lessons to the future.

Your past, whatever it may be, should merely serve as a reference guide for the future. Most people allow their past to hang over their heads in such a way that it stifles their growth. Your growth is based on your ability to learn lessons from your mistakes. We have all made mistakes, no exemptions. The separation from this group comes when you realize the intended lesson that was meant to be learned from making that particular mistake. Continuing to repeat the same mistake simply means that you haven’t learned the intended lesson.

If you are thinking about an event that occurred in the past or even yesterday, understand that this is not the highest and best use of your time or mind space. You cannot change the past, at all times focus on the future. Tomorrow is not promised but that was true for yesterday and thankfully you are still here. Make today what it should be by thinking forward progress only. So, what’s it going to be? Are you going to live in the past or focus on the future?

Stop living in the past. Yesterday really did end last night.

Morning Cup of Joe – Order My Steps

20131120-073211.jpg

No one, no thing and no cosmic force can deny what God has specifically for you. There are times when we pray a particular prayer to receive a specific blessing yet we do nothing to meet God half-way; that is true for most people who pray. They mistakenly believe that their prayers fall on deaf ears when in actuality God is waiting on them to make the first move. Don’t pray and sit, you must move. Understand that it is difficult for God to guide your steps if you are standing still.

Prayer does in fact change things yet taking action forces the prayer to come to realization. Another key component to meeting God half-way is your belief system. You must have unwavering belief that this prayer will come true in order for it to actually come true. You must have unequivocal faith that you will realize what you are praying and hoping God to make happen. Once you pray and start working towards that which you’ve prayed for, watch how fast God works. He can only work if you believe in your heart of hearts that He is able. Believe me, He is able.

No matter your circumstances, God can and will bring you through if you believe that He can. In my own journey, I have been fortunate to realize the power of God and I can almost guarantee that you too can share your testimonies. If He came through for you before, He is able to do it again. If He has helped you to believe that miracles can happen, He is capable of doing it again. Remember, what God has for you is for you. Believe that God can and He will never disappoint you.

Morning Cup of Joe – As A Man Thinketh

20131115-071456.jpg

During a recent life coaching session, a client contacted me because they were nervous about a position they had applied for. Naturally, we all get a little nervous when we are unsure of a particular outcome. As the session continued she said something that caused me to pause. She said “I don’t think I’m going to get the position”. My reply was simply, “How do you know?” I was very confused as to why she thought she would not get a position in which she hasn’t even interviewed for yet.

Oftentimes we talk ourselves out of opportunities because we lack the understanding that our words are extremely powerful and have the rare ability to create our reality. In addition, our thoughts have the ability to become things. Most people have difficulty understanding why they don’t win as often as others do. Some believe that they are just plain unlucky. I am here to tell you that success has absolutely nothing to do with luck and everything to do with how you think, what you say and being ready to accept challenges head on.

Like the old adage says, “As a man thinketh, so is he”. If you think you cannot accomplish something, chances are you won’t. It is imperative that you change your mindset if you are not currently experiencing the joy of accomplishment. Most winners win because they think and believe that they can. There are no secret recipes to winning. It simply starts with your self-talk; what you constantly tell yourself about your situation. At all times maintain a positive mental attitude and you will attract positive things into your life. Believe that you can and you inevitably will.

Success is reserved for those who believe they can succeed; it’s all in your state of mind. Think BIG or don’t think at all.

Morning Cup of Joe – This Too Shall Pass

20130930-062803.jpg

For far too long we’ve held on to the idea that the calm comes before the storm. Scientifically, this does make sense. However, I write this note encouraging you to accept a new way of thinking concerning the aforementioned statement. Please understand that as it relates to your life, the calm does not necessarily come before the storm. In fact, the calm typically comes after the storm; all you have to do is continue to fight and choose to hold on.

Many of us have experienced and continue to experience tumultuous times riddled with trials & tribulations. Rarely do we consider the fact that sometimes we have to go through a storm before we can fully understand the satisfaction that comes with the calm. Simply, if you are currently experiencing a storm in your life, hold on to the idea that all storms eventually pass. Some will argue that the calm comes before and after the storm. I completely agree. Do not be misled, the calm you feel before the storm is meant to prepare you for what’s to come.

Understand that whatever it is you are going through is temporary; you must be willing to endure. Like the old adage says; “trouble don’t last always”. Understand that if you outlast your storm, only then will you be able to appreciate the sunshine that inevitably comes afterwards. Hopefully this new knowledge gives you comfort and understanding that your storm will pass and that your sun will shine again. Make a decision right now today to choose to outlast your storm.

Maintain a firm understanding that after the rain, the sun always shines. After the storm caused by your problems have passed, your sun will also shine. No storm nor problem is everlasting, this too shall pass.

Morning Cup of Joe – Why Worry?

20130926-070223.jpg

This message is written especially for you. You who woke up this morning and fell asleep with “it” on your mind. On your long traffic filled ride to work, it remains on your mind. The clock is nearing noon and your lunch break presents another opportunity to invest countless hours into your problems. All you do all day is worry about your problems. I’m here to tell you that worrying will not offer any solutions.

Worrying is counterproductive. While worrying may serve as a step towards the discovery of a solution, you should consider skipping it. The more time you spend worrying about a problem, the less time you’ll have to devote to finding your solution. The lack of faith many show after they pray for an answer is very interesting; you pray then you worry then you hope. The odds of discovering a solution using this method is virtually impossible. Refocus your energy on what matters most; you.

Many people have the solution at their disposal but lack the necessary discipline to execute it. They make it pass the worry stage, breeze through the possible solutions step and stop at the final stage; execution. You must not only think you must also act. Action is required in order to ensure a desired outcome. And just like that, while you are working, your breakthrough will meet you half-way. It truly is that simple. Stop worrying and start working.

When you genuinely believe in a desired outcome worrying becomes futile.

Morning Cup of Joe – No Regrets

20130917-235450.jpg

Every beginning has an end. It is important that you understand that everything is cyclical in nature which translates to nothing lasts forever. Some may argue that love may be the only exception and there is certainly some truth to that. Start living your life with the understanding that your time on Earth is limited. I’m not trying to scare you; I simply want you to wake up.

Some people live as if they are certain tomorrow will meet them. I’m not saying to not be optimistic about the future. After all, that is what helps us hope for tomorrow; the fact that it could actually be better. What I want you to understand is that your success is based on the effort you place in the daily pursuit of your ultimate goals. Every day presents a new opportunity to get closer to your dreams.

Before the final curtain call, will you be able to say that you did everything you wanted to do? Will you be able to say that you lived a life free of regret? Will others speak of you with complete reverence? If you answered no to any of these questions, you have some work to do. While our paths may be predestined, I truly believe we can alter the future based on the work we do in the present.

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that you lived your life without regrets. You only have 24 hours in a day, don’t spend most of it sleeping. You’ll have plenty of time to do that when it’s all said and done.

Morning Cup of Joe – Tomorrow Is Not Promised

20130807-072518.jpg

Whether you like it or not, tomorrow will come and whether or not you’ve prepared for the day is of no importance. What is destined to happen will in fact happen. If you are one of the fortunate ones to greet the gift that is a day, you must begin to understand the importance of maximizing your minutes. You will only be allotted twenty-four hours each day to affect your circumstances. Whether we like it or not, those hours will continue to tick and tock away waiting for you to make your move. We simply need to decide to act and not to continue to watch time pass us by.

Time waits for no man; I cannot stress this enough. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. That is precisely why we should take advantage of every single precious moment. I want you to shift focus from yourself for just a second and think about the people who matter most in your life. When was the last time you told them you loved them? When was the last time you spoke to a parent? Is there someone who has wronged you in the past whom you haven’t forgiven? Today is the day this change happens.

Every message sent to us is meant to be heard at the specific time we receive it. It is up to us to recognize it as a message. My message is simple; learn to appreciate the time you are blessed with. Do not waste time on people and things that don’t add value to you as a person. You know exactly who & what I am referring to. The time is now for you to make those necessary changes in your life. The time is now to choose to forgive yourself and forgive others; that is the only way you will truly move forward.

Since tomorrow is not promised, choose today to be incredible.

Morning Cup of Joe – New Leaf

20130721-224947.jpg

Why do so many people talk about turning over a new leaf and starting over? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a good thing to start over and start anew. However, there are times when people tend to focus so much on starting anew that they fail to realize that they need to improve on the old. Simply, it is imperative that you focus on fixing the issues now instead of scrapping the original plan and starting over.

One of the most effective ways to start afresh is to clearly understand and respect the events that occurred in your past. In addition, one must focus on the reasons why they want to start over as this may not be the best overall option. Your past should merely serve as a blueprint for your future. The devil is in the details. You have to go back and analyze the battles you were able to overcome and how this newly acquired skill can be transferred to future obstacles. Learn from your past in order to build a better future.

When we attempt to turn over a new leaf, sometimes we ignore what was on the other side. Focus on the other side because that is what got you to the point of wanting to turn over a new leaf; that’s where the puzzle should be solved. We cannot ignore this because those same issues will continue to occur even after you’ve turned over your proverbial new leaf.

While turning over a new leaf don’t lose focus on what’s most important; overall self-improvement.

Morning Cup of Joe – Vision

20130529-065612.jpg

How different would your life be if everything was perfect? What if you were working the job you’ve always wanted, had a healthy and happy family and lived in your dream home? What if your greatest worry was simply waking up the next morning? What if all of this was true? Could your life be what you’ve always dreamt it could be? Is it really that farfetched? In many people’s minds, this is not a reality that they will ever know. Simply because they haven’t discovered the thing that makes all of the aforementioned possible; that thing called vision.

Vision means having an unusual competence in discernment or perception; intelligent foresight. Being visionary forces you to focus on the future. Your head & shoulders can only face one direction at a time; you cannot look forward if you are constantly looking backwards. While the past may serve and should serve only as a reference guide, most people use the past to dictate their present and not their future. Most people make the critical error of allowing their past to control many of the outcomes in their lives by spending time focused on something you can never change; the past. Visionaries use the past as a road-map to eliminate the possibilities of running into the same obstacles over and over again. When the obstacle won’t move, you must.

If you cannot see or visualize how great you can become, it will be nearly impossible to live up to your full potential. While it is very important to focus on and have the ability to drill down to details, it is imperative that you learn to develop the skill of visualizing everything from a bird’s eye view. Being a visionary means having the ability to see that which is not there yet maintain the belief that it will appear one day. When we intently focus on something, just like magic, it seems to magically appear in our lives. If you want to start living a more fulfilling life, you must create a mental picture of what that life specifically looks like. While some claim to have the ability to see the future, you certainly have the ability to see and create the future you want to see in your life starting today. Open your eyes and witness the possibilities.

Having a vision is critical to your success; if you can’t see where you’re going, how are you going to get there?
