Morning Cup of Joe – A Life of Purpose

While scanning through the new releases on Netflix, I realized that one of the greatest movies of all time, in my humble opinion, was listed. With much excitement and anticipation, I selected it and began watching. One of the more powerful scenes early in the movie is captured in a conversation had by Marcus Aurelius and Caesar. While this movie is riddled with memorable quotes, one stood out more than the others.

Marcus Aurelius turns to Caesar and says, “When a man sees his end, he wants to know that there was some purpose to his life.” I pressed paused then rewind on the remote control so that I could hear it again. I started thinking to myself, why wait until a man sees his end? Why not make his life purposeful while he can?

So many of us are waiting for the right time to follow our purpose, while others are waiting for the right sign. I’m here to tell you that the right time doesn’t exist and the right sign may never happen. You must take control of your destiny. Don’t wait until your life has passed before you begin to reflect on it, START NOW! We all want to live a life filled with purpose; at least I believe we do.

We don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring nor do we know if we will be fortunate enough to meet it. What we do know is that you have complete control over today! Do you want to wake up one day and wonder where all the time has gone? Do you want to wake up one day wondering what you have to show for your time spent on earth? Or do you want to wake up at the end of your days and KNOW that you lived a life of purpose?

If you want to live a life filled with purpose, first you must decide to relentlessly follow your dreams. Discover what is most meaningful to you and vigorously pursue it. I have discovered my purpose in life which is to enrich and embolden the lives of others by using my God given gifts and talents. What’s yours?

Morning Cup of Joe – Passion to Profit

We are at an impasse as a society. As the financial divide widens, between the declining middle class and the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, most people are faced with the difficult decision of continuing with the daily grind or taking a risk and starting their own business. These brave folks are venturing out and doing what they’ve always been passionate about. Discovering your passion and taking risks allows you to benefit from the immeasurable rewards that typically follows such risks.

Most successful people find a niche or something they do better than most and execute it. Successful people typically involve themselves with a job that they would do even if they weren’t paid to do it. In fact, they don’t even see it as a job. Successful people maintain a deep understanding of the importance of the following phrase; “If you love what you do for a living, you’ll never work a day in your life”. It makes absolutely no sense to waste your time in a career you have no interest in. Some people are perfectly fine with what they do whether they love it or not; most winners think differently.

The tides are changing and those who are wise enough to change with the tides will not risk drowning or capsizing. The best way to ensure a positive outcome is to do what you love and love what you do. Most people will not subscribe to this rule mainly because it requires a significant amount of risks. Understand that rewards are reserved only for those who are brave enough to take risks. If you are gainfully employed in an industry you are not passionate about, spend time focusing on a hobby that can increase your streams of income. You cannot reasonably expect your quality of life to improve if you only have one source of income.

When you are passionate about your work and you love what you do, the money will always seem like a bonus simply because you would do it for free.

Turn your passion into profit.

Morning Cup of Joe – Finally Free

Why are you here? Seriously, have you given this much thought? Why do you think you were specifically placed on this earth in the earth suit you currently occupy? Some people wake up and follow the same routine day-in and day-out while they dream of a life free of monotony but do absolutely nothing to change it. While following a routine may work just fine for some, winners tend to get bored pretty quickly and constantly seek ways to be better. I know I do.

I do not subscribe to the fact that some people are born to be followers. That is a choice most people make but it should not have to be. I believe that leadership is a skill that can be learned. Take a look at the various industry leaders of today and ask yourself what you have in common with them. When you really analyze it, there is little to no difference between you and them; aside from the fact that they may have a bit more resources than you. Even so, every billion dollar company started out as a free idea. What are your ideas worth?

Your mind has the capacity to create ideas that create wealth. Today, I want you to focus on the question I initially posed; why are you here? Why do you think you were put on this earth and what purpose are you supposed to serve? This is not a simple question and requires a not so simple answer. It is going to take serious introspection to figure out your purpose in life, if you haven’t already. If you have, are you living it? If not, what are you going to do about it? The rewards of living your purpose are immeasurable but first you must find your purpose.

Find your purpose, find your freedom.

Morning Cup of Joe – Expiration

When the end is finally here and you face your final curtain, before you exit the stage, what do you want to be remembered for? That is one of the toughest questions to think about especially as it relates to passing on. What do you want others to say about you when it is all said and done? What will they say? What are you going to do about it now to ensure that your memory lives on?

Some people are very comfortable talking about death and I must admit I am not one of them. Yet I would be remised if I did not help you understand the importance of living life the way God intended you to live. Since the inception of this new understanding, my principle focus has remained on how I can improve my life and the lives of those around me while I am still here to do it. Simply, how can I make every single day count and use my limited time wisely. Each day presents another opportunity to provide answers to these questions.

Please understand that while death is inevitable, living certainly is not. Just because you were born doesn’t mean you’re living. In fact, just because you are alive doesn’t mean you are living either; there is a distinct difference between the two. Understand that people are perishable items with expiration dates much like the items on your grocery list. The goal should be to get maximum use of those perishables prior to their expiration date; your life included. Maximize your full potential and do things you have always wanted to do; visit places you have always wanted to see; commit yourself to experiencing new experiences and learning new things. Your life is worth living; start living today.

Life is truly what you make it. Be sure to make it what it should be before your expiration date.

Morning Cup of Joe – Choose Wisely

To me, it is a little disturbing to think about the substantial amount of people who simply accept things as they are. Going about their day without a care in the world; satisfied with their mediocrity. If you are going to be anything in this world, you cannot be comfortable with the status quo. Don’t be misled, some people are perfectly fine with where they are and are not interested in advancing. That’s simply their prerogative which they’re entitled to. While I have a serious issue with this, I am fully aware that we are all responsible for ourselves.

For a long time in my life I accepted things as they were hoping they would get better. After I realized that this method of thinking and acting was not getting me anywhere, I decided to start demanding things. The one thing that remains constant is the cordiality that exists with my every demand. Before you can demand anything, you must first be confident in knowing what you want; be clear. Once you are clear on what you want, you will be more discerning as it relates to your options. Basically, you won’t be so quick to accept just anything and you shouldn’t.

This is also true in the relationships that we forge. If you are with someone who is not treating you the way you are supposed to be treated, reevaluate your situation and create an exit strategy immediately. The fact of the matter is; you deserve better than what you are currently choosing to accept. Make smart decisions and wise choices that benefit you in the long run. Remember that life’s journey is all about the choices we make; choose wisely.

Morning Cup of Joe – Endurance

Everything happens as it is designed to happen. I believe that our paths are predestined yet the journey is ours to determine. Simply, the route we take to get to the end result may vary based on the obstacles we have to overcome along the way. During our journey, we will be faced will countless “forks in the road”; turning left will yield a particular set of results which would differ if you made a right turn. The goal is to keep driving no matter which side you choose.

Learn to recognize challenges ahead of time so that you can develop a solid plan of attack. Your challenges will look the same, especially if you haven’t learned from them. In some cases, it is a test of endurance. The Endurance Test simply tests your ability to outlast your opponent; in this case, your opponent is your problems. Endurance is the key that will unlock the door to your potential. Understand that God doesn’t make mistakes. And since He doesn’t make mistakes, it is imperative that you learn how to outlast your problems. He will never give you more than you can bear.

Our lives are not as puzzling as some may think. I believe that we assist in the creation of a majority of our own problems; sort of like a self-inflicted wound. We know what pains and troubles us yet many of us prefer to stew in our problems until it boils over instead of doing something about it. Many folks know “how” to overcome an obstacle yet they refuse to take action; an unexplainable phenomenon. We must not wait until it is too late, we must put forth maximum effort in order to produce outstanding results and we must act now.

Quitting is not an option. When you feel like giving up, think about the reason you got in the fight in the first place.

Morning Cup of Joe – What’s Your Purpose?

Ever wonder what your purpose in life is? Of course you have. We have all spent countless hours attempting to answer the age old question, “Why am I here?”. If you already know the answer to that question then that is absolutely incredible. I encourage you to continue on your journey and wish you the very best. If you are like most people, the answer to this question is extremely difficult to answer. I’ve figured out a way to help you get a better understanding of why you are here and how to discover your purpose.

In order to answer “why you are here?”, we must first answer “what are you passionate about?”. Take a moment to think about your answer. It may take more than a moment but it is imperative that you are clear on what you are passionate about. In essence, once you are able to discover your passion, then and only then will you discover your purpose. Your passion is doing what comes naturally, also referred to as your gift. What is it that you do that seems to come easily or naturally? That is the key to finding your purpose.

Finding your purpose is not only restricted to doing what comes naturally, it also deals with love. As far as your natural gift, if you’ve made the discovery, do you love it? Some people are able to naturally run fast but have no desire to be a track star. You must love your passion before it can become your purpose. Finally, you must be able to answer “why and how”. Why do you love this gift that comes naturally and how do you plan on making a positive impact on the world through this gift? Answer these questions and your purpose will be less obscure.

Through these steps, I’ve been fortunate enough to discover my purpose; which is to improve the lives of those who have experienced and continue to experience trials and tribulations by serving as a testimony of what resilience and persistence can produce. My passion is writing and speaking; these attributes come naturally. I absolutely love what I do and I do it because it brings so much joy to my heart when I am able to contribute to others success and help them discover their purpose.

Follow these simple steps, believe that you were destined for greatness and pursuit your passion with vigor. When you discover your passion, you’ll discover your purpose.

Morning Cup of Joe – Just Another Day

We are all built differently. Our minds, our motivations and inspirations differentiate from one another. How we process particular functions are different. We are all individually wired to produce the explicit results and outcomes we have become accustomed to producing. We are all independently created with specific talents and specific gifts. Although we breathe the same air and share the same space, we are not the same.

While we are not the same, we are still one. Learn to condition your mind to believe that your blessings are preordained. The outcomes you have in your life are a result of your actions and/or inaction. Your results are based on what you contribute to the overall picture. Never compare yourself to the best others can do, but to the best you can do. The measure of success is intended to be independently defined. You cannot realistically compare someone else’s results to your efforts. That’s like comparing apples to broccoli; no comparison.

The sooner you realize that we are all uniquely blessed, the sooner you can stop comparing your blessings with the next persons. What you consider just another day, a terminal patient considers a miracle. You have what it takes to be what you want to be so don’t take anything for granted including this day. If you continue to focus your energy and attention on others instead of yourself, they will continue to be ahead of you. Focus on yourself, maximize your potential and walk in the understanding that God made you in his perfect image.

You are blessed, be a blessing to others.

Morning Cup of Joe – Road Less Traveled

There are no accidents. There are no coincidences. Everything that happens in your life happens as it is designed to happen. While some may say that the aforementioned claim lacks credibility, I challenge them to prove differently. Everything that has happened in your life up to this point has gotten you where you are today; the trials, tribulations and triumphs have all been part of your design.

Your successes and failures have also contributed to your current state. Do not be misled, for the most part, where we are today is a direct result of the sum of the choices we’ve made in our lives; good and bad. The thing about choices is that when we choose, it simply means we have options. Imagine driving down an unfamiliar path when suddenly you run into a fork in the road; you cannot go straight, you have two options, left or right. The choice you make will ultimately determine where you end up. Choose, don’t just sit there and wait for a sign. The choice you make will always be the right one for you.

Don’t be afraid to try a route you’ve never traveled; you truly never know where it might lead. Some people restrict from making choices because they don’t know what might happen. This may come as a surprise to some but you will never know what might happen if you never take a chance. Remember the fact that there are no accidents, so no matter what choices you decide to make, know that it is a part of the ultimate plan.

Morning Cup of Joe – Lack Of Direction

There was a conference being held in Orlando which featured some big names including Bobby Bowden, Tony Robbins, Colin Powell and Zig Ziglar. Yes all of these folks in the same building spreading powerful and motivational messages to folks willing to listen. The event was being held at the Amway Arena and I can assure you that it was a packed house. As we entered, the staff asked us to place our business cards in a huge bucket-like contraption in order to be considered for a drawing. Each speaker would pull one card from this bucket and that person will win a prize from the speaker; a set of books, tapes, videos or a combination of them.

After a few speakers, Zig Ziglar was up. I have always had an affinity for Zig because one of my mentors, Jeff Hoffman, introduced me to Zig through his books. He encouraged me to read as many of his books as I can and to retain as much information as it would change my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Zig Ziglar completed his incredible talk and it was time for him to pull a name from the bucket. The odds of winning were 1 in 20,000. He reached his hand deep into the bucket, shuffled around and pulled one out. “Joe Paul” he said. “Come on down here and get a set of these good books and CD’s.” The co-workers I attended the event with were as shocked as I was, particularly due to the fact that the odds were not in our favor. In a strange way, I sort of knew that he was going to call my name and he did.

I had a chance to speak to Zig Ziglar for a brief moment and began reading more and more of the dozens of books he’d written. A few of his unforgettable quotes that have become part of my mantra includes;

“You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.” – Zig Ziglar

“Expect the best. Prepare for the worst. Capitalize on what comes.” – Zig Ziglar

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” – Zig Ziglar

“If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” – Zig Ziglar

One of my all-time favorite quotes from Zig Ziglar is “Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” It’s so funny when I hear people say “I don’t have enough time” or “there aren’t enough hours in the day to get what I need done.” I always wonder what they are doing with the 24 hours they have, most likely not utilizing it to its full potential.

Zig Ziglar was a major influence in my developing a passion for motivational speaking coupled with my testimony to serve as an example of what’s possible when you don’t allow your past to overshadow your future. I encourage you to read one of his books, I hope it will inspire you in ways that it has inspired me.
